The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is scheduled to inform the Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court today (11) of its stand on whether they would be pursuing its case against Dr. Shafi Sahabdeen, who had been arrested under Prevention of Terrorism Act.
This is when the magisterial inquiry into the activities of the Gynaecologist is taken up before Kurunegala Magistrate Sampath Hewawasam today (11).
On the last date of hearing the CID had admitted to not having any concrete evidence against Dr. Shafi connecting him to any terrorist group or that he acted as a member of the now proscribed National Tawheed Jamaat organisation.
The Criminal Investigation Department is thought to be ready to report to court the stand of the Ministry of Defence that they cannot make a case for holding Dr. Shafi under clause 9 (1) of the Terrorist Preventive Act any longer.

In addition a report on the investigation undertaken by a committee headed by the Director of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital into allegations that Dr. Shafi had sterilised patients without their knowledge would also be produced in court today.
