The owners of Singapore-registered MV X-press Pearl which caught fire off Colombo Port have agreed to make an interim payment to Sri Lanka for the damage done to the marine environment of the country, an official said.

Director-general of Merchant Shipping Secretariat Ajith Seneviratne told a news conference yesterday that necessary steps had been initiated with all the stakeholders including the insurance companies to secure compensations for the damage done by the ill-fated vessel with containers laden with chemicals among others.

The Sri Lankan authorities fought relentlessly to douse the blaze.

Mr. Seneviratne said claims would be made through the Attorney General to get total compensation, and, in the meantime, the owners of the ship had agreed to make an interim report in addition to support for beach clearance work.(KELUM BANDARA)

The ship owners will do a deal to pay little or no compensation as their price for cooperating in the cover up of the corruption of the Government in allowing the MV X-press Pearl entry to the outer harbour. When will our nation be rid of this Curse.

No compensation is equal to the damage it has caused. It has caused a huge damage to this nation. and its ecology. So, do not take compensation but take action. next time punish all port authorities who gave permission to enter our water. so sad. why people do this for this nation. we are not a dumping ground for anyone. you all are destroying our ecology? what Sri Lanka has done to you to do this ? we do not harm any one and do not expect any harm from any one.

Compensation cannot be a finite amount of money, as the damage and consequences to health, environment and livelihood, including tourism ( who wants to swim in polluted sea and eat contaminated seafood) is unmeasurable. It will need ongoing monitoring for years!

We must claim compensation from both Americans
