RW govt. will not agree on external mechanism: Foreign Minister

Sri Lanka is looking at a holistic and a long lasting solution for human rights and stressed the need to go for a truth seeking Mechanism within the framework of the constitution of Sri Lanka, Foreign Minister Ali Sabri said today.

He told a news conference that the policy of the Ranil Wickremesinghe government was not to agree on an external mechanism as the Constitution of Sri Lanka does not allow that.

He said Sri Lanka would advocate for a domestic mechanism which is transparent and acceptable to all the communities living in the country.

“We have continuously engaged with the international community. We are not interested in any confrontations. We are only interested in cordial relationships with all multilateral agencies and bilateral countries. That is the policy of this Wickremesinghe government. Specific instructions have been given for engagement. We are looking at a holistic solution or a lasting solution to the problems or the grievances of all parties who have suffered the long term conflict of this country,” he said.

If external mechanism is not heeded, govt. must hasten implementation of the grievances of the disappeared with housing, employment, educational and a pension scheme, draging this issue further would affect SriLanka's image in the world fora and tend to engineer certain sanctions against SriLanka. Implantation of the 13th amendment is a better solution as well.

When Ranjan was being shuffled into the prison, it's the law, that's what must happen it's the law. When there is any attempt to have scrutiny about any of the forced disappearances here again oh, it's the law, it's the law, it's in the constitution we can't allow for anyone else to check about it. If the IMF had any real expectation for our country to improve they should've put in changes required to all these weird laws, and constitutional elements. IMF loan with the attitudes of MPs and government like this means, 10 or 15 years, again the same problems emerge. Developed nations don't have this amount of political murders or economic issues because they don't stagnate with the madly nationalist politics done by our politicians.
