An investigation had been launched in connection with a complaint lodged by Ven. Magalkande Sudatta Thera alleging that several police officers were maintaining links with notorious underworld figure Mohammed Najeem Mohammed Imran alias Kanjipaanai Imran, who is currently being detained at the CCD, police said.
The monk had also handed over a video clip to the police which shows Imran had celebrated his birthday inside the CCD premises and some officers were engaged in friendly conversation with the detainee.
Police said a senior superintendent of police (SSP) is to lead the investigation into the complaint under the direction of the senior DIG in charge of the Western Province. They said the Police HQ had instructed to take stringent disciplinary action against any police officer who found to have had links with the suspect.
Kanjipaanai Imran was arrested in Dubai along with a group of 30, including drug kingpin 'Makandure Madush' in February over possession of narcotics during a party. He was then deported to the country and was taken into custody by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and then handed over to the CCD. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
