Postal workers on ’sick leave’ today

Sri Lanka Post and Telecommunication Services Union has launched a countrywide ‘sick leave’ trade union action from last night against the Government's decision to recruit officers, which is against the standard recruitment procedures.

The Union's Chief Chinthaka Bandara said the strike was launched based on several demands including violating the standard recruitment procedures.

Meanwhile, the Postal Department has cancelled the leave of all postal workers with immediate effect.

 However, Joint Postal Trade Union (JPTU) said, it will proceed with the trade union action, despite the cancellation of leave.

"Sending and receiving mails from the Colombo Central Mail Exchange (CME) has come to a standstill due to the trade union action. 

All post offices in the country have decided to refrain from offering postal and related service to the general public," Mr. Bandara said.

However, Trade Union action will be called off from midnight today, he said.

He also said, if the Government fails to resolve the issues,  the ordinary trade union action would swell into massive protests. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
