A Chief Inspector attached to the Weliweriya Police Minor Offences branch swallowed two Rs. 5000 notes which he had accepted as a bribe when he was confronted by bribery officials yesterday, the police said.

According to investigations, the CI had initially accepted a sum of Rs.15,000 to resolve a vehicle dispute but he had ended up swallowing Rs.10,000 when he was caught.

This is very common in Sri Lanka you cannot get any work done without offering a bribe to the peon or the officer in a Government Department. When politicians earn big money than what they earn the ordinary man also tries to do the same. As such accepting or soliciting bribes should be made a non punishable offence in Sri Lanka.

Best thing to do is to scrap the police department altogether, and recruit all police personnel anew with strict conditions on discipline, discipline and discipline.
