While warning that there could be a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in the country at the end of the festive season, Public Health Inspectors (PHI) Union stressed the Government must make sure that travel restrictions are imposed across districts ahead of festive season.
Speaking to Daily Mirror, Union President, Upul Rohana said there was no necessity to impose lock down but added it was of utmost importance that the Government curtailed the movement of the public by imposing travel restrictions to prevent people from travelling from high-risk areas to low-risk areas.
“As the health authorities have already identified the high-risk areas, it is indeed pivotal to make sure that people in such areas are not entering the areas where there is less risk in terms of the Covid-19 situation,” he underlined.
PHIS warn of sudden spike in Covid-19 if border restrictions are not imposed ahead of festive season, Mr. Rohana emphasized.
Meanwhile, when asked whether the Covid situation in the country had come under control, he said it was not so but it had not still gone out of control.
“The reason to say that the situation has not come under control is that there are still positive cases being reported of which the sources are unknown,” Rohana pointed out.
“The worst part of the country to be hit by Covid-19 at present is the area of the Colombo Municipality while there are also several cases being reported from Galle, Central and North-western Provinces,” he added. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

One serious problem in controlling the Covid epidemic is that there are too many experts, all putting in their two cents worth. Trade unions like the GMOA and the PHIs' Union should stay out of it. The Health Ministry and the Covid Task Force should be allowed to get on with the job without unwanted advice from people who are just looking for publicity.
