An operation to detect vehicles with worn out tyres has been temporarily suspended.

Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that the operation has been suspended taking into consideration the issues faced by vehicle owners.

Rambukwella said the matter had been raised during the recent Cabinet meeting.

He also said that steps will be taken to import tyres to meet the requirements in the market.

Vehicle owners, including private bus operators, had raised concerns over the shortage of new tyres in the market.

The Police had, this week, launched a special operation to detect vehicles operating on the streets with worn out tyres.

Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana had said that operating vehicles on the streets with worn out tyres is one of the causes for road accidents.

DIG Ajith Rohana said that a fine of Rs. 3500 can be imposed for operating vehicles on the streets with worn out tyres.

He also said that if there is an accident as a result of worn out tyres on a vehicle, then a fine of Rs. 25,000 can be imposed. ( Easwaran Rutnam)
