One of each sluice gates of Upper Kothmale and Wimalasurendra reservoirs have been opened due to heavy rains in the central hills, the Disaster Management Centre said.
Nuwara Eliya district DMC Assistant Director Ranjith Alahakoon said more rainfall in the catchment areas including the upper Kothmele reservoir.
Therefore, one sluice gate of the Upper Kothmale reservoir has been opened automatically. In the event of more rains in the area, and depending on the capacity of the reservoir there would be a possibility of opening more sluice gates as the system is operated automatically.
Therefore, Alahakoon requested the public that reside in the downstream area to be vigilant of possible flood threats.
Meanwhile, the DMC also said the other sluice gates of the Wimalasurendra reservoir would be opened based on the rainfall in the hydro- catchment areas. (Ranjith Rajapaksa)
