Issuing of vehicle number plates sans provincial code indicators will come to effect from January 1, Transport State Minister Dilum Amunugama said.

The proposal was made by the Transport Minister Gamini Lokuge was approved by the Cabinet yesterday.

Accordingly, the characters to identify the provinces were added to the number plate when registering vehicles to ease the process at the vehicular emission tests and annual revenue license renewal.

The gazette notification on this will be issued soon, the State Minister said.

He said according to the new process, each vehicle would have only one number, even when the ownership was switched between provinces.

The persons who get vehicles from other provinces have to pay for the new number plates, according to the provinces, such as Western Province (WP) or Central Province (CP),” he said and added that to minimise the process involved, Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology too would be introduced to automatically identify and track vehicles.

The state minister said tag reading equipment would be given to the Police stations and other relevant departments to identify the vehicle’s current owner and his details. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

What about vehicles already having number plates displaying provincial coding? Have these vehicles still have to get revenue license and fitness reports from the same province the vehicle is registered or can they get it from any province?

What is the sense in this?? With the Provincial indicators the Police could track errant vehicles far more easily. Now who is responsible for this which will allow crooks to escape undetected very easily. Quite unnecessary and illogical it seems. MM

In some cases , the province of the vehicle in front helps you judge the driving capacity of them. Especially helpful in keeping a safe distance. Now all are same. Help me God!

The police is going high tech, they will access the RMV database from a mobile device from anywhere in the country to lookup the vehicle details in real time? What harm if the provincial markings are retained? Don’t we have more important things to do at this moment?

This is the problem we have to face when we have less educated ministers in the parliament. Changing the number plates is it a burning issue in this country ? When we have so many other economic issues such as downgraded Fitch ratings etc etc.
