UPFA MP Kumara Welgama today proposed that normal passenger bus service should be started on the expressways to facilitate ordinary people. Currently, only the luxury bus service is in operation here.

"Normal bus service should also be allowed on the expressways at least during the weekends to facilitate people who are leaving for their villages. They cannot afford high rates charged on luxury bus service," he said.

Speaking at the committee stage debate of the Transport Ministry, he said the government should pay its attention on purchasing luxury buses from India instead of purchasing them from China as proposed.

"A luxury bus can be purchased at a cost of Rs. 12 million from India. It will cost about Rs. 50 million to purchase electric buses from China. We are not that developed to invest such an amount as the fare we charge from passengers will not change," he said. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Yes. These 'normal' should be only 'leyland' buses! With those train horns fixed. And a good mixture in the fuel.

Firstly there is an urgent need to educate the drivers to abide the road laws, Keeping to the lanes not driving on 2 lanes, being better educated when on the roads. By keeping to the left unless overtaking. These simple rules will make it safer for all road users traveling down South. These are some of my observation during my visit down South in the past few months. Then it will be safer permit private buses to use these roads.
