One resident from Havelock City in Colombo has tested positive for the new, highly contagious UK variant of COVID-19, making it the first case to be detected in Colombo city, the Daily Mirror learns.
The resident, who tested positive for the new variant has been taken into a treatment facility while authorities have begun contact tracing to identify the patient's first and second contacts.
A senior health official told Daily Mirror that the patient's house had been disinfected while family members were placed under quarantine.
In addition to this, cases of the new variant were also detected from Biyagama, Avisawella and Vavuniya.
Colombo continues to be a hot spot for the COVID-19 virus as the highest number of patients continue to be reported from the Western Province.
Health experts have warned that the number of infected patients may rise in the coming weeks due to the spread of the new variant and the public have been encouraged to wear two masks - a surgical mask and a tight fitting cloth mask on top of it as practiced in other countries who are facing a vast spread of this virus.
Authorities have insisted they will not go in for an islandwide lockdown or of the Western Province but said appropriate measures will be taken to prevent a spread of the new variant. (JAMILA HUSAIN)

Heading for further disaster. More than the detection the prevention is the need of the hour. Average man is living with under nutrition and finding to make his living. Forget the politics and all must get to together to save the poor masses from this dangerous epidemic.

We already heard this from news. Colombo was one of the four areas where the new variant was detected recently; other areas were Avissawella, Biyagama and Vavuniya. The most hilarious part of the story - 'making it the first case to be detected in Colombo city.' This is like making a mountain out of a molehill. Try and give something new to readers.

I honestly don’t know why this government thinks people will listen to them when the People in charge of the covid task force went for birthday parties while asking others to be careful

As per the building manager at phase 3, he has checked with the phase 1 and phase 2 building managers and nothing of the sort has been reported. He has also checked with the area MOH and he has confirmed there's no report of a resident testing positive with the new variant. Please explain ...

We have checked with our family friends who live at Havelock City and apparently there is nothing of that sort as they have checked with the management and the PHI and other relevant authorities, I wonder why people spread rumors without proper facts, and put unwanted fear and stress in people.
