Issuing IDs under One Day Service temporarily halted

The Department for Registration of Persons today said the issuance of National Identity Cards (NIC) under the one day service (ODS) had been temporarily halted until Monday (8) following malfunction of the computer system. 

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, its Commissioner of Operation and Information Technology, Division Harsha Illukpitiya said only the one day service had been halted but accepting applications for the normal service was continuing as usual. 

The processing and releasing of IDs under the normal service usually takes at least a maximum of two weeks. However, the applications for IDs under the normal service would be accepted free of charge today following the orders of the Commissioner General,” he said. 

The Commissioner General has instructed to post the IDs under the normal service within three days, he said. He has also instructed to conduct this process as a special service, Mr. Illukpitiya said. He said the one-day service would be able to recommence from next Monday (8).  

The Information Technology Department is working on rectifying the error, he added. About 1, 200 IDs are issued as an average process per day. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
