The government plans to commission the proposed LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) power project in 2021 to add 300 megawatts of electricity to the national grid, a spokesman said yesterday.
The Cabinet has decided to award the contract to a Chinese consortium ‘GCL WindForce & RenewGen.
Spokesman for the Power, Energy and Business Development Ministry Sulakshana Jayawardane told Daily Mirror the tender had been awarded to the Chinese consortium based on a decision taken by the Cabinet and that the power purchase agreement would be signed soon.
At present, the Technical Evaluation Committee (TEC) is attending to the power purchase agreement, it said.
Asked whether it would be possible to commission the plant according to the 2021 timeline, he said it could be done if the work starts within the next two to three months. “We plan to finish building the LNG project by that timeline,” he said.
Sri Lanka needs 2600 megawatts of electricity for the daytime and 2300 megawatts for night-time. There is a shortfall at the moment due to the drop in hydro-power generation. The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is purchasing power from the private sector to meet the demand without load shedding at the moment.
The delay in constructing a power plant is cited as the reason for the current power crisis. (Kelum Bandara)

With this LNG project consider the re-newable energy ( Mini Hydro , Solar and Wind ) projects awaiting for approval ! .

This is wishful thinking. We do not have a terminal to handle LNG. This will take time. Anyway time the CEB, environmentalist and the Gamarala lift their bums and get to work. Never too late. No more debate on TV on which plant is better PLEASE. The Black Coats at the Comedy Channel keep off.

The way the tender was handled was to say it was fraudulent at the least , breaking all rules and regulations on how tenders are to be processed. Thus allowing disqualified bidders who were not technically qualified on the initial evaluation to be brought in illegally breaking all tender regulations. Who are now being brought back in by political pull which in turn is blocking genuine bids from new comers. MR President and RW hope Yu will not turn a blind eye anymore. We need an independent inquiry please. We need the Attorney General to act independently upholding the independence of the judiciary and take this matter on as its creating a dangerous precedent for future tenders in this country. International tenders need strict compliance.

If a 300 MW LNG plant can be commissioned by 2021 it will be a miracle. Such plants are not available off the shelf unless they have a discarded secondhand product in a warehouse. Then a LNG handling facility and a 220KV transmission line has to be in place

Government may have decided and cabinet approval given. But are the 'engineers' approving it? They are much more powerful than any minister. Get their approval first, else the project would be made a failure!

I'm assuming that each MP got at least $ 200,000 from the Chinese company to buy their scrap, although it is more expensive than excellent technology from Germany.
