Death of SL student in Japan: Victim groaned in pain for hours
An interim report issued by Japan’s Immigration Bureau regarding the death of Sri Lankan student Wishma Sandamali has revealed that the detainee groaned in pain for hours before breathing her last in her solitary confinement cell at Nagoya Detention Centre in Japan last March.
Wishma Sandamali Rathnayake (33) who was being detained for overstaying her student visa, died on March 6 after complaining of a stomach ache and other symptoms from mid-January. Her death has raised questions about the medical care provided to her at the detention facility, triggering allegations of basic human rights violations.
According to the report which details the care provided for her and the circumstances leading to her death, she received no emergency treatment for more than two hours, despite the cell being under 24/7 CCTV surveillance.
Wishma’s family came to Japan recently to perform the last rites of their sister and push Japanese authorities for a transparent and speedy investigation into the death. Her sisters criticised that they felt as if the immigration bureau was “covering the truth.” (Piyumi Fonseka)
