They said the five-year-old child playing in the playground, was  suddenly encircled by a pack of stray dogs and started attacking the child.

It was reported that the workers who were on duty at the playground rushed to the scene and rescued the child with great effort. One of the dogs was killed during the rescue effort.

The injured student was admitted to the District General Hospital in Matale under his grandfather's care.

The Matale hospital sources said the dogs had bitten the child's back and one of the legs.
