The Government approved the resolution submitted by the Transport Minister for taking necessary measures for utilizing the online prepaid transit card for public transport, Co-Cabinet spokesman Udaya Gammanpila said.

He said the system will be implemented in the public transport sector as a solution to using money to buy tickets.

To explore this matter further, the Cabinet Ministers have appointed a monitoring committee comprising of representatives of relevant stakeholders to implement a project and to introduce an online pre-paid transit card to be used in the public transport buses and trains with the objective of circumventing inconveniences caused due to that, the Minister said.

This is a good move and government can also introduce gps location of buses so that commuters need not wait at the bus halts for long period of time.

A similar project was started in one route. Maybe it was not continued because of change of government. Might as well rename it and continue (like the megapolis system)

Is this matter for cabinet to approve? Looks like cabinet is working on easy things while ignoring major problems in the country.
