Oxford-AstraZeneca Vaccine was not effective on the new COVID-19 variant virus, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said.

He said this was revealed in tests conducted on the vaccine.

He said at the Opposition Leader’s Mobile Service in Lunugamwehera recently that Sri Lanka has obtained this Oxford-AstraZeneca Vaccine and added the situation is turning out to be serious.

He said the government has not taken any step to purchase vaccines except for 600,000 vials donated by India.

"The government has forgotten that there are 22 million people living in this country and that they have no plans to bring more vaccines in addition to the 600,000 given free of charge," he said.

    RoaringCreek Monday, 15 February 2021 12:25 PM

It is better to use the Pfizer or the Moderna vaccine which is mRNA based. The Oxford-AstraZeneca Vaccine is fine and is used in UK. In addition Oxford-AstraZeneca has applied for it to be used in Japan. This man should watch out when making these bearless statements.

What Sajith Premadasa is saying is true. It has been found that the Oxford-AstraZeneca is less effective to the South African strain. But, it is better to have Oxford vaccine than not having it as the vaccine will build stronger antibodes to fight the virus. The Army commander said that there are 18 strains in Sri Lanka.
