The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday ruled that a 15-year-old student of Puhulwella Central College in Matara has been assaulted and deprived of his hearing by violating his fundamental rights.

The Supreme Court has ordered Jayantha Premakumara Siriwardena, a teacher-in-charge of discipline at the school, to pay a fine of Rs. 150,000 as a compensation to the aggrieved student.

In addition, the Court also ordered the Government to pay a compensation of Rs. 500,000 to the student for violating his fundamental rights.

The Court ruled that the student’s hearing loss was a serious violation of fundamental rights.

The petition was filed in the Supreme Court on February 13, 2017 alleging that the respondent teacher had assaulted the student and as a result the student had completely lost his hearing and that the fundamental rights of the student had been violated. (YOSHITHA PERERA)

So exactly what do you want the Supreme Court to do ? Award the student an insufficient yet payable amount, or award a massive yet totally unrealistic sum of say ... Rs. 25 million ? Why don't you get real !

if it is a Tamil or muslim boy will the pay the compensasion?

The education department should be made responsible to,treat this child till his hearing returns to normal by specialist and other nessary treatment. Further more the teacher who perpetrated this assault should be charged for assault and imprisoned other wise the law of the land would be a laughable piece of legislation.

Teacher may be one of those who was abused as a child. These are the guys who abuse children when they become adults. It gets passed on from one generation to the other. Authorities should send this teacher for rehabilitation. The child should get moral support to come over this ordeal. Otherwise he will have similar issues when he becomes an adult.

Compensation of at least 50 million should be paid by to the child. Laws need to be amended.
