UNP working committee which met yesterday concluded without a final decision on party leadership and decided to meet on the first week in September to make the final decision.
This was mentioned in an official statement from the party last evening.
UNP Legal Secretary Nissanka Nanayakkara told journalists after the working committee meeting at Sirikotha yesterday that the final decision on a new leader and the revamping the party will be made during the first week in September. “The final decision on the new leader and on the revamping of the party will be made during the first week of September. This means the final decision on the new leader will be made in a week’s time,” Mr. Nanayakkara said.
“The working committee was of the opinion that the new leader should be a member of the party and of the working committee,” he added while highlighting that this was the pulse of the working committee members with regard to the proposal made by the former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya that he is willing to take over the leadership following the request made from him by many sections.
