Three youth belonging to an extended family drowned at Waikkal in Wennappuwa on Saturday when they were relaxing at the beach, Wennappuwa Police said.

The victims have been identified as 15-year-old Warnakulasooriyage Nadeera Gimsara Thisera of Irabadagama, Sandalankawa, 17-year-old Warnakulasooriyage Kaweesha Sevmini of Makandura, Nalawalana and 21-year-old Warnakulasooriyage Heshan Chamara of Singakkuliya, Sandalankawa.  A group of ten people belonging to an extended family including the victims had visited the beach which the authorities have identified as a dangerous zone. While on an excursion the girl had been carried away by the currents.  The other two had attempted to rescue her, but they too had been carried away by the currents. The 15-year-old boy and the girl had been rescued and taken to Dankotuwa Hospital immediately but were pronounced dead on admission. 21-year-old Heshan’s body had been washed ashore yesterday near Ma Oya.  The 15-year-old boy was a student of Wekada Maha Vidyalaya while the girl was a student of Sandalankawa Central College.
