A six-year-old boy died yesterday morning after being knocked down by a lorry in Badulla, Police said.

They said the boy was knocked down soon after the lorry started moving after refuelling from a fuel station near the Badulla Provincial Council Office.   The 63-year-old grandmother of the child was also injured in the accident, they said.

The child was on his way to school for the first day after receiving admission to Grade one.

The child and the grandmother were knocked down while they were walking along the road that leads to the school, through the fuel station in Badulla.  The driver was arrested by the Badulla Police for negligent driving.   The grandmother was hospitalised after sustaining serious injuries, the police added.
