Appointing Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa as the new leader of the United National Party (UNP) will be a better option rather than appointing former speaker Karu Jayasuriya to the post, SJB Kurunegala District MP Nalin Bandara Jayamaha said yesterday.
He told a news conference that the general election result is an indication that people see him as an alternative to the government. “This feat was achieved by the SJB even without a constitution and without proper office bearers,” the MP said and added that currently there was none in the UNP who is capable of taking over the leadership.
“The SJB has not personal issues with Mr. Jayasuriya but it is best for him to uphold his reputation instead of spoiling it by talking over the UNP,” he said.
MP Mujibur Rahaman said his party was ready to support any new constitution which ensures democracy. “There is no point in amending certain clauses of the constitution in a hurry if the government is planning to bring in a new constitution,” he said.
The MP asked the government to explain its concept of one country, one law. “There is only one criminal law and civil law. There is also one Constitution which is common to everyone. Other laws such as the Muslim law are more less laws which are practiced by people belonging to one ethnic group. Therefore what does the government mean with one country one law,” he said.
