Parliament yesterday approved a motion to refer the question of privilege raised by Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to the committee on Ethics and Privileges under the Standing
Order 118.
The motion presented by House Leader Lakshman Kiriella was approved unanimously.
Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka on Wednesday asked for all parliamentary privileges he lost during the time he was in jail to be restored to him. He said he was court marshaled twice during the previous regime while he was sent to Welikada Prison later which resulted in him losing parliamentary privileges. He asked that all the privileges he lost during the time he was jailed including the MP’s salary to be restored. Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said on Thursday that the matter could be referred to the ethics and privileges committee.
