The Prisons Department is expected to introduce a new mobile jamming system to prevent inmates from using mobile phones in prisons, Prisons Commissioner General Thushara Upuldeniya said.
He said the main objective of introducing the jamming system is to make mobile phones a useless electronic device within the prison.
“The persons who smuggle in mobile phones into the prison resort to various tactics. However, we manage to seize those mobile phones but now the smugglers use more advanced methods to smuggle in mobile phones,” the Prisons Commissioner General said. “We can only beat this issue by using advanced technology,” he said. “Therefore, we discussed this issue with the President, the Subject Minister and Prison officials to put an end to this threat with the use of latest technology. Installing high-tech equipment in prisons is much needed to prevent smuggling in of mobile phones,” Mr. Upuldeniya added.
