UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has requested party lawyers to look into the powers and functions of the party leader under the present party constitution and prepare a discussion paper suggesting necessary changes to be done, sources close to Mr.Wickremesinghe said.

This move came amidst concerns by the seniors of the party that powers of the party leader under the present party constitution are excessive and therefore need to be revised.
Under the present provisions of the party constitution, the party leader is appointed for a term of six years and cannot be removed from the post during his tenure. Party seniors have suggested to Mr. Wickremesinghe that these provisions in the constitution need to be reviewed.

Arising from these concerns, the party leader has asked lawyers to prepare a discussion paper on necessary changes which need to be made so that this can be discussed and debated by the members of the party and finally adopted at the Working Committee.
