SLMC urges govt. to not to allow cinnamon cigarettes

The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) has called on the government to not market and allow the manufacturing of the new cinnamon cigarettes as there is nothing called ‘harmless’ smoking. The medical association pointed out that any smoking product, herbal or otherwise, when used regularly would cause harm to the lungs. “Some substances that can be ingested when ingested as food, such as cinnamon, can be harmful when smoked. The argument that this is a harmless alternative to tobacco smoking is therefore false,” the SLMA said. The regulations pertaining to the launch of the new cigarette is yet to be clarified by relevant authorities. Ceylon Tobacco Company (CTC) PLC holds legal monopoly for cigarette manufacturing and sales in Sri Lanka.
