Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council yesterday expressed concern over the sudden resignation of Sri Lanka Customs Director General Jagath P. Wijeweera.
“It is with great regret that we have noted the sudden resignation of the Director General of Sri Lanka Customs,” a statement issued by the maritime body said.
Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayke announced the resignation of Jayaweera at a press conference on Monday. The statement credited Wijeweera with initiating hands on approach in solving importer and exporter issues spontaneously.

“He was also spearheading the Customs initiatives on e-Commerce and rendered an enormous service by providing leadership to his team and adopting a balanced approach with all stakeholders.”

“We appreciate the efforts of Wijeweera and acknowledge his straightforwardness, honesty and transparency when dealing with Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council and its associate members.”

The Shippers Council urged the authorities to ensure the continuity of the good work initiated by the Customs for the benefit of trade and related services.
