The Waters Edge Hotel, Battaramulla broke ground for its extensive expansion project of the 4-floor banquet facility this week, with the objectuve of providing a unique ballroom experience along with the country’s largest banquet facility to visitors by the end of next year.
Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, who broke the ground, said the hotel was a precedent to all other government institutions which aspired to become
self-reliant.
“The Waters Edge Hotel is a government institution, but doesn’t ask for funds from the government. We are always accused of operating State institutions which incurred heavy losses and reminded of how private institutions are effective and lucrative,” the minister said at the ceremony held to initiate the project.
Commenting on the previous government’s inability to compensate the residents who were evacuated to facilitate the development projects in Battaramulla, he said the incumbent government was able to complete the process of compensating.
The Minister said the government would aim for a self-reliant economy instead of a debt filled one.
Meanwhile, he said a convention centre would be constructed in the Waters Edge premises in the near future and said the hotel would become the most favourite place of visit in the administrative capital within the next three years.

Chairman of Waters Edge, Chamath De Silva said the ballroom expansion was long overdue because of the completion of rising banquet halls in Colombo and its suburbs.
Silva said the expansion of the banquet facilities at Waters Edge was twofold. “On one hand we will expand our space offering on each of the four floors. On the other hand we are also concentrating heavily on ensuring that service delivery at banquets is enhanced as well,” he said. Once expanded, the hotel would house one of the largest banquet halls and will include two guest lifts and two service lifts. Waters Edge General Manager Rohan Fernandopulle said their ultimate goal was to improve facilities for banquet guests and be known for outstanding service delivery in all areas of our operations.
“We also want to ensure our guests that the hotels operations will continue as usual despite the expansion project. This project is also envisioned to make operations smoother for our events and logistics partners who have come to trust us for all their events as well as for our staff who will be able to serve you better,” he said.
