- Maldives welcomed total of 454,383 visitors in the first five months of the year
Tourist arrivals to Maldives contracted in the month of May when compared with April, as it attracted a total of 64, 613 travellers.
While in May the archipelago witnessed a dip of about 29 percent from the previous month, on a Year-on-Year (YoY) basis, tourist arrivals expanded significantly with May 2020 recording only four arrivals.
While the country attracted nearly 2000 tourists per day on average in May, the duration of stay was about 9 days as shared by the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Maldives.
Analysing the arrivals for the five months of the year starting January, month of May recorded the lowest number of tourists visiting the country so far, whereas March recorded the highest number of visitations in 2021 with 109, 585 travelers entering the country.
The month of May is the start of the low season for tourism in Maldives since it marks the beginning of the Southwest monsoon, which extends to November.
On a cumulative basis, Maldives has welcomed a total of 454,383 visitors in the first five months of the year, which is an 18.7 percent growth from the corresponding period in 2020.
However, when compared with 2019, arrivals for the January to May period have contracted by about 39 percent.
Further, the top sourcing market for tourism in Maldives for 2021 thus far is Russia, which surpassed India with a 23.3 percent market share.
India fell to second position with 19.7 percent market share, and is closely followed by Germany (5.5 percent, Ukraine (5.1 percent), and Kazakhstan (3.7 percent).
