Dufry wins tender to carry out duty free operations at BIA

Sri Lanka will award a five-year duty free retail concession to Dufry AG of Switzerland to carry out duty free operations at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).


A proposal made to in this regard by Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, based on the recommendations of the standing Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers this week.


Accordingly, BIA will have two duty free operators, Flemingo Duty Free and Dufry. 


World Duty Free, a Dufry company, has carried out duty free operations at BIA earlier.


BIA handled 9.47 million international passengers in 2016, with passenger traffic growing by 14 percent for the year 2016. The new airport terminal is due to be operational by 2020.
