Dampened tea production witnessed in June



Sri Lanka’s tea production in June contracted, with the output totalling 20.15 MnKgs. The June production is a 5.29 MnKg dip when compared with the corresponding month of the previous year, where the output was of 26.07 MnKgs.


When compared with the June 2020 production, the output in June 2022 is a decrease of 7.21 MnKgs. Data from the Sri Lanka Tea Board showed that all elevations have shown a decline over the corresponding month in 2021. For the month of June, production of High Growns dampened by 31.03 percent year-on-year (YoY), Medium Growns dipped by 34.30 percent YoY and Low Growns dipped by 15.94 percent. Meanwhile, the output of green tea contracted by a staggering 48.11 percent.


Cumulative analysis shows that for the first six months of the year ending in June, production totalled 132.92 MnKgs. This is a significant decrease of 28.79 MnKgs when compared with the corresponding period of the previous year (2021), where an output of 161.71 MnKgs was achieved.  On a cumulative basis too, all elevations have shown a decline over the corresponding 


period of 2021.  When compared to 130.46 MnKgs of COVID-19-impacted January-June 2020, the cumulative production of 2022 shows a marginal increase of 2.46 MnKgs. On a cumulative basis, High and Mid Grown elevations show a decline over the corresponding period of 2020, whilst the Low Growns record a gain.
