Deploring Sri Lanka for threatening to open fire and arrest the Indian fishermen crossing the International Maritime Border Line (IMBL) for fishing, Tamil Manila Congress (TMC) president G.K. Vasan has said ‘threats and advises’ would not help to find a lasting solution to the vexatious issue.

Talking to reporters on Friday, Mr. Vasan regretted that no tangible solution was in sight for the Palk Bay conflict even after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka and despite three rounds of talks between the fishermen of the two countries.

When the fishermen were looking for a positive signal from the Sri Lankan Tamil fishermen after the third round of talks held in Chennai on April 24, the Sri Lankan government hardened its stand, warning that its navy would arrest the fishermen found poaching in their waters, he said.

When a delegation of fishermen leaders met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in Delhi recently with high hopes of arriving at a solution, Ms. Swaraj disappointed them by advising not to cross the IMBL and avoid conflicts with Sri Lanka. The Minister, who was well aware that fishermen have to abandon fishing if they were asked not to fish across the boundary line, showed no interest in solving the issue, he charged. Adding to the woes, the Coast Guard had filed an affidavit before the Madurai Bench of Madras High court defaming the fishing community, he said. (The Hindu)

Most of the fishing done here by TN fishermen are for export and to make profits. It is an invasion of our country. If TN fishermen are given the opportunity then it would become the basis that they were fishing legally and they would be getting and will seek more rights to fish here. And more and more Indian fishermen will start to come and there wont be fishermen fishing in Indian waters. SL should never give any legal standing to any TN fishermen to fish here. Indians should also realize that they eat stolen fish. What happens "Be Indian, buy Indian" mentality and they should change it to " Be Indian Buy sri lankan, buy stolen stuff". How would they feel if we ask on humanitarian grounds to allow our farmers to take their crops, fruits and vegetables from their fields even for 83 days per year. Sri lankans came here from ancient India and it could be called our traditional farming land so we too have the right to take what we want. So that we too can exports it like they do.

Why the F... do you want encroach and ransack others waters and livelihoods ? greed surpass sense. You should ask yourselves a very pertinent question ? You want to sustain your illegal and nefarious activities under the guise of fishing ???

THE REAL REASON WHY THESE FISHERMEN KEEP CROSSING INTO SL WATERS IS FOR SMUGGLING PURPOSES. GOLD, DRUGS, WEAPONS...

    P Dias Monday, 04 May 2015 10:03 AM

They should exploits other resources in their own country.

Mr. Vasan, there is a simple tangible solution, TELL YOUR FISHERMEN NOT TO STRAY INTO SRI LANKAN WATERS

    Dr I.M.C.Fernando,UK. Tuesday, 05 May 2015 05:13 AM

Mr Vasan is not telling the truth.Daily Mirror of 27April 2015 reported "Indian fishermen engage in illegal acts in SL waters: India" The Indian Coast Guard had reported to the Madras High Court that Indian fishermen indulge in various illegal acts such as smuggling contraband such as drugs and trawling in SL waters. So Mr Vasan knows very well who is causing the problem. Also, why is the TNA silent. Are they not interested in the Tamil fishermen, perhaps not !!!
