The UNP has criticized the move taken by the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) to support the government for constitutional reforms and is to discuss the matter next week.

UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya speaking to Daily Mirror online said that the SLMC had contested past elections under the UNP symbol and as such SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem should have consulted the UNP leadership before arriving at any decision.

HE said that the UNP will meet next week to discuss the latest developments following the SLMC backing the government for constitutional reforms. (ISA)

    Jettisoned from a sinking ship.

    Raj Saturday, 28 August 2010 10:03 AM

Mr. Karu Jayasuriya, don't cry for spilled milk. You did the samething. How can you forget your past so easily?

    fxt Saturday, 28 August 2010 10:06 AM

Hobson's choice for Hakeem. Either you support or we bribe your MPs and break your party.

The arm twisting works all the time given the quality of our MPs.

    Practical Saturday, 28 August 2010 10:24 AM

I dont think Ruaff Hakeem or the SLMC represent the Muslim community.

    Fazlan Saturday, 28 August 2010 10:38 AM

How UNP cal slams others ???
They should do this within their party

Smart Aleck Saturday, 28 August 2010 10:41 AM

The disgusting result of Coalition Politics. Didn't the foolish and gullible UNP voters of Kandy District give their vote to this joker?

    Rahmathullah Saturday, 28 August 2010 10:53 AM

Karu has no moral right to talk about defection. Karu is solely responsible for UNP's current status and RW should not have taken him back.

    Ruwan Saturday, 28 August 2010 10:54 AM

Main reson for this kind of things happen is week opposition and opposition leadership, this is sad situation to our countrie's democracy.

    Sumal Saturday, 28 August 2010 11:21 AM

SLMC claims they have the support of majority of Muslims. This was proved during the last presidential election.

    adiyagama Saturday, 28 August 2010 11:39 AM

Who really wants to get into the sinking ship?

Ruwan Ferdinandez Saturday, 28 August 2010 12:53 PM

Ok, that's what everybody else says, but don't you think it is more to do with strong popular government than the weak opposition?

    ismath Saturday, 28 August 2010 01:44 PM

this what we said dont allow to contest in unp ticket

    acord4 Saturday, 28 August 2010 02:22 PM

Eastern people does the same..SLMC is only for Eastern Muslims...not for the others

Ibnu Batuta Saturday, 28 August 2010 02:31 PM

If RH did not take this decision only he will remain in opposition with the UNP. The rest of SLMC members would have been bought over.

Nihal Fernando Saturday, 28 August 2010 09:25 AM

Rauff Hakeem has been a pendulum in politics and the swing is very simple for him.

    Riz Saturday, 28 August 2010 02:44 PM

Ranil and Hakeem both had Tea in Temple Tree ..... I am guessing that their is something in that tea.......

    channa Saturday, 28 August 2010 02:46 PM

    Absolutely right....

    Thanga Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:37 PM

Once again the Muslim politicians have provedc beyond any shadow of doubt they are the best pole-vaulters and turn coats in Sri Lankan politics.

    bernard Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:54 PM

I would say all the opposition parties should join the government now and become watch dogs to keep an eye on frauds and wrong decisions instead of wasting time in the opposition.

    Saleem Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:01 PM

    You are 100% right .

    ruwan Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:31 PM

If Ranil can have unofficial meeting with MR why not SLMC

    SL1 Saturday, 28 August 2010 06:09 PM

    Dear President,

Please give Ranil a minister post and take him into the Governement. Then UNP and all of us will have peace forever.

    Peter Saturday, 28 August 2010 06:12 PM

Clinging on to one side, no matter what, is not wise. There are people who vote UNP, just because it is 'UNP', no matter what.

    Peter Saturday, 28 August 2010 06:16 PM

So what is wrong with that.

    Peter Saturday, 28 August 2010 06:19 PM

Don't you know there are a lot of muslim votes in Kandy. He is a wise man. He knows what is best for the country.

    Hussein Sunday, 29 August 2010 07:24 AM

UNP should support the SLMC. It is disrespectful and persecution to demand the SLMC support UNP. Our brothers should make the Govt understand the need for SLMC support.

    goyya Sunday, 29 August 2010 07:54 AM

    Yes karu,
Keep on slashing every one, only thing you all can do.
Let the party & the people suffer, but keep on slashing while protecting PO(X)SI leader.

    Shm Sunday, 29 August 2010 08:05 AM

Karu returned to the party to break it further and it's proved, all these are politics

    MH-NZ Saturday, 28 August 2010 07:33 AM

Its high time UNP knew Hakeem is good at playing Hora Police

    N.B.M.Arachchi Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:57 AM

    too late.....

    Sena2 Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:04 AM

SLMC as a separate political party has the right to make its own decisions. It's not going to make any difference whether tthe UNP discuss the issue or not.

    haha Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:09 AM

UNP worried as SLMC jumped the queue

Shibly Anwar Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:25 AM

Is Rauff Hakeem the cheat of Muslim community, last prey to Mahinda's cunning tactics or are there many more?

    Noah Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:31 AM

SLMC guys are jobless now. They cant escape from the big bro. MRs shadow. Same thing happened for UNP. No wonder even if SF will join this governmnet. Politicians are shameless fellows

    mike Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:43 AM

Yes give your support for better and united Sri Lanka, and make it a place on earth, and not hell.

    noel Saturday, 28 August 2010 06:43 AM

There is no difference between Ranil and Hakeem...Both had tea with president.....

    Gunda Saturday, 28 August 2010 06:46 AM

Too little .. Too Late .... for UNP on many things.

    Rosh Saturday, 28 August 2010 06:50 AM

So much for your call for a Grand Opposition Alliance.

Bitter Truth Saturday, 28 August 2010 06:52 AM

ARMA Cader of Gampola proved he is right.

    nishantha Saturday, 28 August 2010 07:13 AM

Karu Jayasuriya speaks as if he is a saint. When he joined the Government it was a correct move and when another one does that its bad. Karu is just another shameless people we have in politics.

    Jalaldeen Saturday, 28 August 2010 07:28 AM

Mr. Karu..ask your leader to join the government..then u can become the leader

    Dheen Saturday, 28 August 2010 07:28 AM

Changing sides for their own benefit is nothing new in Sri Lanka - these guys should be banished from the electorate. They are only concerned about their own selves, shameless creatures.

    Roshan Saturday, 28 August 2010 04:55 AM

If your leader can have secret talks with MR then what's wrong in Hakeem backing the Government . Did you discuss with the party when you crossed over to PA.?

    jay Saturday, 28 August 2010 07:38 AM

karu alof a sudden started barking to keep his diputy leadership safe. another joker.

Victor Fernando Saturday, 28 August 2010 07:38 AM

I hope Karu would have got the answer from Mr. Roshan''s comment

    Sam Saturday, 28 August 2010 07:59 AM

Kary is making a big noise these days. He has now forgotten how he went after MR hoping to become PM. Father Crab advising the other fellows.
    -Sam

    pj Saturday, 28 August 2010 08:02 AM

..and your Leader is not a dealer of hope Mr.Karu !!!

    Mawbima Saturday, 28 August 2010 08:03 AM

Ethics, policies & principals in the field of politics have gove to dogs. Both people (most of them) and politicians are ready sell policies for self benefit.. This is not an exception.

    rajitha Saturday, 28 August 2010 08:24 AM

"Money Talks", may come from different forms including appointments. Democracy is dying in Sri Lanka and I am so sad.

    harry Saturday, 28 August 2010 08:28 AM

    Yes.RW in to MR's cabinet.

    M ASHRAFF NAZIM Saturday, 28 August 2010 09:02 AM

WHAT SLMC DID WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND IT IS WRONG. - ashraff nazim dubai

    Pottuvilan Saturday, 28 August 2010 09:20 AM

MR KARU COULD YOU TELL US HOW MANY LEADER IN YOUR UNP INSIDE ITSELF?

Ruwan Ferdinandez Saturday, 28 August 2010 09:22 AM

But what is the point of being in the opposition for ever? As a party, as they claim, that stands for the rights of a section of people, no wonder they feel they need to work with the government.

Ruwan Ferdinandez Saturday, 28 August 2010 09:23 AM

During election periods, they go with their heart, often support the UNP, but other times, they have to go with their brain and work with whatever the government.

Ruwan Ferdinandez Saturday, 28 August 2010 09:24 AM

Were you sad ever before about the state of the country's democracy? or is it the first time?
