The UNP was gradually building rapport with the JVP and would work together whenever a need arises, UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said today.

Leader of Opposition Mr. Wickremsinghe who responded to a question raised by the journalists as to whether the joint opposition group ‘Vipakshaye Virodaya’ intended to invite other opposition political parties to the fold, said it was only the JVP which had not joined the opposition group.

He said the UNP was working closely with the JVP in Parliament and would join UNP and the others whenever a need for such cooperation arose.
He said ‘Janatha Mantrana Saba’ (A people’s assembly) organized by the ‘Vipakshaye Virodaya’ would be held on November 22 at New town Hall.

Asked why the people had lost faith in the opposition, the opposition leader said this notion was not correct as the people had only lost faith in media.

Also he said he has nothing say about this budget as it has not offered anything to the people and all negative parts of it were not disclosed. However he said this was a one percent budget as concessions were given only to one percent of the population. The only concession given in this budget was the relaxing of import duty for racing cars.

United Socialist Party Leader Siritunga Jayasuriya who elaborated on this said this would be held to discuss the people’s ideas and their expectations with regard to the economy.

Mavubima Janatha Pakshaya Leader Hemakumara Nanayakkra, NSSP Leader Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne, Nawa Sihala Urumya Leader Sarath Manamendra, Janatha Peramuna Leader Sisimasiri Hapuarachchi, Deputy Leader DPF Dr. A. N. Kumarguruparan participated in the press conference.(Yohan Perera )

why discount what JVP did?? Madam Bandaranayake too took them seriously and treated them squarely in 1971. Policies apart JVP has the ability to convince (rightly or wrongly) the innocent people of Sri Lanka!!
