UNP approves party polls

The UNP Working Committee today approved the reforms committee report which includes recommendations that all the top positions except the posts of Treasurer and General Secretary should be appointed by election among the party members, UNP Chief Organiser Joseph Michael Perera said.

Accordingly, the appointment of the party leader is also required to be put to a vote at the Working Committee. (KB)

To maintain good governors practise it necessary to elect treasure by the party membership. He also needs to prepare and present annual financial statements to party annual convention for approval. These financial statements should account for funds raised on all occasions including elections by all party officials. These are essential to win credibility. It is also important to appoint qualified auditor to verify and provide opinion on these financial statements.

This secret ballot is an eye wash..! The leader should be elected through a secret ballot at the National Convention!!!! or at the "Executive Committee" And not at the "WORKING COMMITTEE" where most members are appointed by Ranil. It is not an independent cross section of the party. Even under the present Reforms the Leader can appoint "20 stooges" and many more.... to the Working Committee.

This decision is not good. The Leader of party should come from bottom to top. It should take decades to be leader. This decision was taken just to send ranil home. But in future if someone with lot of money can buy few members and be the leader. Think twice.

dear "master sir" - at least when Ranasinghe Premadasa was the leader there was provision in the constitution to change the leader. After Ranils' tinkering even if the leader is confined to Angoda (let alone Cambridge Place) there is no provision to remove the leader.

If you go to have elections at every convention that will be the end of the GOP. Anyone can be present at the convention (even SLFPers and JVPers) so long as you pay the membership fee. You want them to elect a leader for the UNP??

Some of u sound like UNP is dead and burried and its making a return. No one can do anything to this party. Its resting for the moment. Present govt is no match to UNP at all. This govt is completely lucky with its time and nothing else. Many think that replacing Ranil is good for the party. But in that case we are going to lose a leader who has vision and foresight for the contry. Good luck, Lets see how it goes.
