I guess the girl is not a Tamil. Had she been a Tamil from the UK, the story might have been twisted. So sad Sri Lanka.

Agree with Gayan
One case out of 500K tourists. These kind of incidents are common in many other countries, some times ago there was a case in Goa, India, the victim was murdered. Later found the victim was a drug addict and was out in her room drinking even after mid-night inviting trouble. Murderers were identified, Due to political involvement, case delayed and delayed...
But in this case in Galle, I think that our legal system will take necessary step as the culprit is in custody.

tamils and sinhalese, or muslims and burghers are all capable of rape. What is your point? Dont drag race into everything.

No need of Saudi laws. We have a good enough system. What ever the system, that does not prevent bad people doing bad things. System is just a deterrent to a degree.

I am not from the south, but its only people from the south who are this way? No one in colombo? No one from elsewhere? Dont be prejudiced.
I know well educated professionals in the city who cannot complete a sentence in English without a swear word.

Disgraceful. It is a regret to hear a Manager of a hotel raping a 14 year teenage girl, who visited as a guest. We have heard a number of sexsual haraasment complaints from guests but this is the worst ever heard. A big blow to our tourism industry. The victims position cannot be rectified at any cost. Be a detterent maximun punishment should be imposed.

While condemning this barbaric act by the Manager, Western visitors to our country should have the knowledge about our way of life, our culture and heritage. Some tourists behave and wear very inappropriately without realizing the temptation that they are offering to onlookers, this is one of the reasons and tourists should be made aware of these things. I once again condemn this act by the Manager which has brought the whole country to shame.

As a country which is trying to get out of this economic mess with some help from the tourism industry this news sounds very unfortunate. Bad impact on "Visit Sri Lanka 2011" project. Hope the culprit would get maximum punishment if found guilty so that it would be a lesson for others.

hotchoc56 Wednesday, 14 July 2010 08:30 AM
One of the reasons for this is the short-sightedness of SOME of our less-enlightened religious and political extremists, who campaign for lovers being caught in public, nudity on screen to be banned, kissing to be banned on screen and in public, pornography (underage porn certainly is abhorrent!) etc.
It is only in this country that not a day goes by without a rape being reported. How many go unreported is a mystery. Why? Because there's no sexual freedom. The repression is what creates these beasts!

If you sneeze the government has to be blamed.. These things can happen in any part of the world. What government has to do is that it should take all the possible actions to eradicate such things. At the moment, we should target the tourism industry, as it plays a serious role in our economy. -- "Stop it Immediately" --Later it could be addressed widely.

exactly. we should have a more liberal society. we are not the taliban to ban porn. porn is bad but try googling 'sexual frustration' watching porn reduces sexual frustration. i don't know much truth there is in that study, but most of the experts advice the same. please see things in a broader prospective and have open mind to all situations.

soon after the war ended New York Times travel guide nominated Sri Lanka as the top travel destination for 2010. We need only a couple of rapes incidents like this by peadophiles on western tourists to destroy the image.
