A A A

The protest march organised by the People’s Movement Against the Increased Electricity Bill (PMAIEB) with the participation of  several political parties and trade unions started a short while ago at Campbell Park, Borella.

Meanwhile another protest march supporting the Electricity tariff hike began from Lake House and is moving towards Technical Junction.

The PMAIEB protest march which is scheduled to proceed to Pettah has been restricted to Maradana by the police to avoid a possible clash with the protest march which was heading towards the Technical Junction from Lake House.

Sri-Lanka is the only country in the whole world, where protest is held to support price increase!

its me Wednesday, 15 May 2013 11:02 AM

I would love to meet the people who are supporting the tariff.

    Not a Joke Wednesday, 15 May 2013 11:10 AM

They are the thugs of ministers and forces in civil clothes.

    Mugiwara Wednesday, 15 May 2013 11:14 AM

The protest supporting the hike must the rich who protest so that they get huge tax cuts for their businesses and political support. The best way, is to increase the number of people protesting against the tariff hike to millions. then we can see how many people really want a hike.

    hb Wednesday, 15 May 2013 10:54 AM

Wow a protest in support of electricity hike? Suppose when the masses organize a protest against corruption, there will be another protest coming in the opposite direction in support of corruption by a few pro government thugs and the police will block the protest by the masses to prevent a clash. Aascharyamath ratak!!!

    poorman Wednesday, 15 May 2013 11:35 AM

Put on a counter demonstration for the price of a few bottles of grog and a lunch packet and then say anti-hike demo has to be restricted to avoid clash. And so democratic protest further eroded. That would be fooling whom exactly?

    Viewer Wednesday, 15 May 2013 12:06 PM

Don't blame them. They would not know why they came for.

    Ruwan Thursday, 16 May 2013 03:39 AM

you are totally right. what foolish action by the govt. henchiyalas. they soon pay the price

Calistus Jayatilleke Thursday, 16 May 2013 10:41 AM

It is only in Sri Lanka one can find absolute idiots who even support price hikes to curry favour with the ruling politicians in return for a packet of rice, a dram of cheap arrack and a few rupees. We had seen such people even in the past during the pre-1977 period when they marched shouting they will eat manioc instead of rice, drink tea without sugar, prepare gravy without chillies etc. to satisfy the then government. If some organization decides to organize a competition to select the most idiotic people in a country, the our people will win hands down.

    Piumal Wednesday, 15 May 2013 10:28 AM

MR is very smart. He was able to prevent the protesting march coming to Pettah.

    The Opposition failed.

    Chandima Wednesday, 15 May 2013 09:59 AM

The counter protest marchers were brought in CTB buses and they were well fed and watered

    indira Wednesday, 15 May 2013 10:43 AM

Good Move. Govt. please take the list from protest march supporting the Electricity tariff hike group and keep their increase and remove the same for the other group. This is another joke from the Govt side to organize a supporting group to contain protest march as they know repercussions if they use force at this stage.

    Lankashantha Wednesday, 15 May 2013 10:52 AM
