Three students of the South Eastern University have been suspended following a protest staged during the visit of Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake to the university yesterday, Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) said.
According to IUSF Convener Sanjeewa Bandara the students had staged a protest objecting to the Minister’s arrival at the university premises to participate in a graduation ceremony of external-degree holders. “Several officers of the STF had assaulted a student and threatened the students to stop the protest and three students had been arrested,” Bandara added. Students think that they can do what ever they like within the university. They should be taught how to behave, how to dress, how to eat, and how to study. The training in camps is a good opportunity for them.

So people get arrested if they stage a protest in this country. ? And it's supposed to be a democracy. ?
RAJIV Tuesday, 31 May 2011 10:43 AM
The right to protest is guaranteed under the constitution. If they did the protest in the non violent manner then no one has the right to arrest anybody. Once the PTA is removed non of this arrests are possible and the people of the country will have a say in ho runs this beautiful island we call home. If these students should be released without delay and aggravation of other students and firm action should be taken on the STF for using excessive force. Students must respect the law and so should everybody else.

Students should behave like students & not like hooligans. These IUSF students should be punished & stop this nonsense for ever in this country. JVP is behind this for sure.

The governor said STF assaulted students. So it looks like it is standard police action now.
