The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today alleged that ousted Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra had visited Sri Lanka in December and given over funds to the government for the upcoming polls.

Speaking to the media today,  JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe said that the former Prime Minister of Thailand; who was deposed in a military coup, had arrived on the 12th of December on board a private plane and left on the 13th of last month.

Amarasinghe accused the government of attempting to damage the diplomatic relations between the two countries, especially as Shinawatra had links to both Kumaran Pathmanathan and the LTTE.

Meanwhile Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama rejected claims by the JVP that ousted Thailand Prime Minister Thaksin Shinwatra had aided in the Election campaign of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

“What the leader of the JVP Somawansa Amerasinghe has stated of Mr. Thaksin Shinwatra contributing to the campaign of President Mahinda Rajapaksa or any type of association with the President is a complete falsehood and I reject it completely,” Bogollagama told Daily Mirror Online.

The Foreign Minister asserted that this was another attempt to mar the name of the President and adversely influence the relationship between Sri Lanka and Thailand.

“Thus I consider this to be another attempt by the JVP to bring disrepute to the high office of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and also to influence the cordial relationship between Thailand and Sri Lanka by casting such accusations and creating a distorted version of matters,” he said.

When questioned as to whether the Minister was aware of Mr. Shinwatra’s visit to the island on the 12th and 13th December as alleged by the JVP the Minister stated that no invitation had been extended to Mr. Shinwatra on a state level. “I as the Foreign Minister say with great responsibility that no invitation was extended to Mr. Shinwatra on the level of the President, the Government or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Bogollagama said.

I'm not a supporter of MR and hence my vote will be for SF. Having said that, what is wrong if Thaksin provide funds for MR's campaigns? Hope this story in DM is not quoted out of context. If what is reported is true, JVP should know when to raise their voices and when to keep quiet.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 08:21 AM

We have very clear evidence to say thay Taksin funded JVP for SF operation. Somawansa can you deny it?

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 08:23 AM

JVP may have asked for funds from Mr.Takishin as they can not go on roads with their begging bowls.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 08:23 AM

What is he saying. Former Thai Prime Minister has checked into an Air Line lounge. Is it a crime.I failed to understand what is the point Somawansa is making. All these things are fairy tales of a captain whose ship is sinking faster than expected.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 08:34 AM

Oh come on! are you thinking with your brain? No matter what, MR has done a lot of good stuff. It is not just the president's job to take the country up. We also need to contribute. At least with our attitudes. When people like you always focus on the small negative things forgetting the good things, how can this country prosper? Do you seriously think the SF+Ranil+Mangala+JVP+TNA alliance is going to take our country to greater heights?!! You gotta be kidding me! Is there any clause in their manifesto which says that?

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 08:46 AM

It is appalling how politicians today are behaving like little kids. This has become a race where they are trying to make one candidate the worst rather than creating a productive atmosphere in which they create a forum to evaluate substantial plans for the future of the country. Pathetic!

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 08:54 AM

Few unfortunate fellow citizens who are locked up in Mulleriyawa and Angoda must be wondering why on earth they are being discriminated? It looks as if the whole country is a mental asylum and we all are insane!

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:02 AM

I think its time that both sides stop throwing mud at each other as most people have pretty much made up their mind about whom they are voting for. These last minute punches are a waste of time.

If we are not educated enough to weigh the pros and cons of each of the contenders and select the better of the two then we have a long way to go and actually deserve whom we get as our leaders.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:03 AM

There was some talk of Thaksin becoming one of the Presidential Advisers. So this may be a sort of a down payment in anticipation of a Rajapakse victory so that Thaksin can come and park himself in Sri Lanka. With such valuable advice coming from a person like Thaksin, the Brothers Company would be able to go sky high in corrupt activities.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:03 AM

Didn't you see the authenticated copy of the reservation of "Laksiri" VIP lounge made for Thakshin Shinavatra? How can you say that it was "cooked up" by the JVP? Look at facts before you speak my friend.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 08:20 AM

well it's better than JVP taking money from USA & Norway ,

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:14 AM

Somawansa ,i came to sri lanka in December 24th in emirates air plane. If you come across my name in the list by any chance ,leave it.i didnt give a single cents to MR. I swear .OK?.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:29 AM

Earlier the news was about Taksin the former primeminister of Thailand was seeking citizenship here to settle in exile now the story is twisted that he is funding the election on behalf of our president. It is ridiculous to think. Why he should do so and what benefits he would get, can he stage a come back and become again premier in Thailand- who is ruling there now, the palace or the junta?

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:29 AM

JVP wants to make something out of nothing. remember only you believe in what you believe or probably not even you, becaues you people do not have a conscience of your own

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:34 AM

Desperate Somawansa Amarasinghe, here's a bright idea. Why not start writing some innovative kiddie books?

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:47 AM

Kasun appears to be living in dream land!!! It is documented that 9% of this country's GDP is squandered due to corruption. That is approximately a whopping 200 billion !!! When you refer to thieves i guess you were referrring to the current regime. If not you seriously live in a world of your own. Good luck

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 10:56 AM

They are showing proof, why are u accusing the JVP?

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:49 AM

    Michael,

Sri Lanka would be a paradise if only 9% of the GDP is stolen. With MR and his clan, it's more like 30-40%.

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 04:58 PM

MR should join thanksin after the 26th and find a permanednet of place to stay in and count their loot before it is taken away from him.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:36 AM

    ROBBING PETER PAYING PAUL.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:21 AM

JVP why you are telling this now. Seems you are short of Topics to talk on. You are proving that JVP is the biggest JOKE of Sri lanka Politics.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:26 AM

Back boneless JVP only can say this kind of things

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:29 AM

well, he has been thrown out of his country and its much easier for us to kick him out if he is trying to prostitute our country too.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:29 AM

all the people who are theives are getting together

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:35 AM

One corrupt politician backing another. Way to go!

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:35 AM

JVP is quite good in cooking up stories. they sleep & wakes up with all conspiracy theories :) a must (about 2 seats) minority in parliament

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:36 AM

This guy would prefer MR to be in power... So that we will never be able to rise above them in the world arena... It is quite evident that as long as MR stays in power, this nation will never rise in the International arena.... It is MR who seems to be playing the role of Idi Amin in this country by challenging the developed countries and this was the ideology of Idi Amin too... Dont you folks remember....???

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:36 AM

    From one loser to another.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:18 AM

So where is Somawansa's delaration of assets? What does he do when he is abroad? Where does he find money to travel around the world? Is it the poor people's money that they collect or is it still the wealth they amassed at gun point in 1989?

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:54 AM

I am not a fan of MR. In fact I will not even vote for MR. However I can confidently say that Dr. Thaksin will not give any money for elections in Sri Lanka. Yes JVP claim for Dr. Thaksin's arrival to Sri Lanka on the 12th Dec is correct. This is on his way to Cambodia and just a stop over. There is no connection of his travel to SL and the election.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:56 AM

This story is irrelevant at this stage of election. It would have been better even it is so happened, just not to reveal, as it will serve no purpose.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:57 AM

Well... Dr Shinovetra arrives in the country for one day for god knows what and here you see Somawansa being creative and telling stories... and yeah I agree with Prof Antony... Before pointing fingers at other they should declare where their funds are coming from... And this person who calls himself the Free thinker is thinking a bit too freely... Idi Amin? are you kidding me dude? you have any idea what you are talking about? get your facts straight before you make comments in public..

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:58 AM

Prof. ( if you are a real prof.) Read the contents of the message. It's not anything to do with Mr. Somawansa's assets. If you are arguing on that point.... then from where did MR get money to spend for this election?? Isn't it OUR money that he is spending??

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:59 AM

It's wonderful. Politicians now act as investigators and bring all the happenings in the dark to light.Good luck citizens.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 08:04 AM

I cannot understand why Taksin should fund the election for PA if the President, according to JVP has been so corrupt and amassing a large wealth through corruption.

Desperate JVP and few others are trying every trick in the book to avoid getting dumped to the political dustbin in Sri Lanka.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 08:05 AM

JVP thanks a lot for the information -we srilankans are greatful to you for exposing the regime

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 08:19 AM

This is getting funny and out of control .. JVP please go have a life !!!
