A new born baby who was found stuffed in a bag filled with corn leftovers for more than five hours in Anuradhapura was rescued after the doctor who was treating the child’s underage mother intervened promptly. This article broke my heart. This mother needs help and counseling. She should not be treated a criminal. She was, apparently, not given the proper advice, during her pregnancy - leading to this. Please show some compassion to this poor mother. She should be encouraged to bring-up this little baby with all the help we can give her. (If I can donate any money towards this, please let me know.)

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 02:05 PM

My heart gets broken when I read such stories. How come these innocent cute children can be treated this way. Unfortunately this happens around the world around the clock. Idiots call for safe sex encouraging prostitution and premarital sex. I say severe punishment should be imposed for Adultery and Fornication if we are at-least to reduce these kinds of barbaric acts.

All the heartbreak, insults and condemnation is forced upon the young mother. I for one, would never believe a girl would casually engage in sex other than by coersion, persuation and trickery by a man. But where is the man (as is the case when such things happen)? It could happen anywhere in the world, but as a Nation with so much heritage, the govt. and men should endeavour to show genuine love, care and consideration to our vulnerable women. Not affection with a hidden agenda.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 02:11 PM

sex education is the answer to master such troubles. Definitely this young girl love her child and would not have given away her baby if the family and society would be understanding. But we live in a society full of prejudice which know only saints and sinners (similar in the politics: patriots / traitors). She had no choice either kill herself and leave the baby alone or abandon the baby to survive. What a tragedy? Thanks Mr. Ratnaweera, we need more people like you in this society. May be we can do something together to give this baby a good start.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 02:17 PM

she is young and she is scared of our dreadful society but she love her child...please have some understanding for her. The best help we could offer is to get them back together and protect both.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 02:57 PM

    Wish I could adopt her.
    God Bless her.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 03:34 PM

It took Five Hours to find this baby? Are we people blind?

I am not here to argue the act of the mother and father is correct or not, I want my society to pay attention to their surrounding.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 03:43 PM

poverty has nothing to do with moral obligations and moral responsibility.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 03:44 PM

I am sure the mother at that time was desperate. The mother herself need help and guidence from her family

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 03:45 PM

    Nothing Fails Like Prayers !.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 03:48 PM

Ishrath, there is no such thing as illegal sex unless its a rape or probably prostitution (which i don't believe in making illicit, either). firstly this is a matter of the tolerance in our society, the so called ''cultured''. I am sure our good old days weren't like these. its obvious when u read most of comments here advocating hatred towards the mom. its time to open up the society, make sex a casual topic rather than taboo and institutionalize the means to support such cases through government or other welfare organizations..

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 04:18 PM

It is very easy for all these "holier than thou" people to criticise others without first stopping to think what led this teenage mother to abandon the baby,

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 08:08 PM

Most of above posts blame the mother. Has anyone thought of the other party responsible for this beautiful new life? The father of this baby has the same responsibility as its mother. Does anyone know about him? Who knows how she got pregnant? It could be a result of a rape. What happened to her parents? Where were they during the nine months or so? Blaming only the mother is not reasonable, as she is just a child, herself. There are many facts we don’t know! However, I am glad that both are doing well.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 10:50 PM

What our hypocritical "cultured" society needs to do, is to stop being so rigid and judgmental; and, stop tabooing divorce and sex-before-marriage. We should encourage sex-education and contraception.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 01:36 PM

we srilankan do still not look at the root cause of the problem. it is really multi-factorial. ex; cultural deterioration due to unfiltered third class mass media, lethargic traditions such as horoscope and cast, unsuitable law such as age of marriage, free mixing of gender and lack of spirituality

    Friday, 26 February 2010 03:24 AM

the mother is ignorance of the subject it is the duty of the parents and schools and the government official together to solve the problem. and they teach the children the life style.

    Friday, 26 February 2010 04:00 AM

Yes you are right..!! Mr Niranga..!! we should not make it a taboo and not make it a casual topic either.

    Friday, 26 February 2010 04:10 AM

Hope Sarath Fonsek is not behind all this

    Friday, 26 February 2010 04:17 AM

Babies are God Sent Angels, Adorable child, wonder how the mother had the heart to dump this child, if she had difficulties in raising the child or may it be faxcing the world , surely she could have left the baby in an orphnange, as for my knowladge there are so many childless parents waiting to adopt , and who knows that this child could get a better home and love than Death, VERY SAD

    Friday, 26 February 2010 04:38 AM

does this disprove the myth of motherly love.

    Friday, 26 February 2010 04:42 AM

Timym, you are either ignorant or uneducated to think like this. You don't know the circumstances that led this girl to do a thing like this. Please don't judge. She is just a teenager. I think more should be done to help and NOT criticize.

    Friday, 26 February 2010 04:44 AM

Every one will scold the mother who has dumped the child, but if any one to stop these has to listen part of her story as well. Poverty and lack of education ....may and may not be the only results. what about the man who is behind this teenage mother. For one 1Km down the road how many guest houses hotels are blooming with A?C non AC rooms. SO called Cultural society ???? This is the only country in the world where so called preachers act as "Dawal migel Re Daniel"

    Friday, 26 February 2010 05:18 AM

    OMG!! what a cute baby..

    Friday, 26 February 2010 05:23 AM

    Oh what a beautiful baby!
For a mother to abandon this baby she may have reasons.
One can only ponder as to what?

Anyway now the baby is safe. Thank god!

    Friday, 26 February 2010 05:32 AM

What a stupid comment to make! Please don't make such harsh judgments on people without knowing the whole story. It is people like you and your stupid attitudes that force underage mothers to commit such acts! Shame on you!!!

    Friday, 26 February 2010 05:53 AM

Actually, its not God's fault that babies die! But rather its our fault who tell God to "go fly a kite"!! when we need Him the most... Then we blame everything on God...

The main issue with some of these abandoned baby problems is the pure fright which is developed in the young mother (who's sh*t scared to face her parents)..

I know this since I've personally seen teens who had such issues and were kept at a convent in moratuwa until the proper court adoption procedures were followed... The only people who could ever love these young mothers were the nuns running the convent.. I've seen brother's and sister's abandon their own kindred because of such pregnancy events... Very very sad indeed !!!

So personally I know what kind of sh*t these young mothers have to put up with, especially since they come from a poverty stricken background..

    Saturday, 27 February 2010 09:49 PM

Our PM Wikramanayaka still lives in the stoneages!

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 09:47 AM

    God's creation and God protected

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 08:49 AM

Very sad news! Poverty, unedcuation and ignorance and above all lack of love and kindness resulted this mum to throw this sweet baby.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 08:55 AM

And Ratnsiri Wickremanayake still believes that we have not lost our traditions, customs and humanity.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 08:55 AM

unforgiving, non understanding culture of these countries push the innocent mothers to this plight. Until people become open minded these cannot be stopped. Are people getting ready for such a free society.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 09:03 AM

This woman should be sent to Bankock forcefulley and earn money and give every penney she earn to this kid. SL must bring tuff law and maximum punichments for bit__ like this.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 09:06 AM

We call ourselves a cultured nation. I've heard lot of stories ab't teen mothers in the West. They never dump their children, they would rather give them to foster parents

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 09:08 AM

Sweet baby................ yaah allaah save this baby

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 09:09 AM

I cannot believe how can a mum do this kind of things for her baby. It is fortunate that this baby was lucky enough to save his/her life. We believe that authorities will do needful to make the baby's life safe and happy.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 09:14 AM

This is because of poverty in this country. Bright future...........

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 09:25 AM

This is not poverty or un-education, this is a result of craving for sex before the legal age and maturity.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 09:35 AM

It's very sad to hear;in my view;this child should be adoped to those who are longing for child.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 09:46 AM

when my daughter was born i couldn't sleep a winck ... i was so happy. i don't know how this woman has a heart to throw her baby.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 09:47 AM

There is no law in this country. Every main towns there are lot of guest houses which accommodate rooms for underaged couples . For these illegal thing no police raids as they are getting money from the owners. These things happen as result of these illegal things. From small age children should be educated the value of a human beign. Pathetic situation in the country.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 08:37 AM

This is a matter of illegal sex out of Marriage. Dumping a little baby in this way is so pathetic, there is so many people who are desperate to have a baby in there life. May God protect this baby and make it a useful citizen in Sri Lanka.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 09:56 AM

If the hospital needs any finacial assistance for the baby's welfare please request the Doctor who acted promptly to save he baby to contact me through my email. Will do whatever possible within my means as the baby should be under due care of the hospital than going in to an orphanage.

I am sure this doctor will do so much for this baby. Well done doc. We need people like you to live longer.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 10:19 AM

Unwanted babies or pregnancy is the result of practice of unprotected sex and sex starvation created by too rigid laws on making advanced towards the opposite sex and the resultant stigma of living a single mother and raising a baby alone. The traditions is stifled by the forward march of modernization it is like closing the nose forcifully when one is about to sneeze, it is impractical. Registration of love may be the answer if love after marriage is impractical due to the early sexual activeness of the modern youth. There is a news: 10 yr old girl abused by 8 yr old boy and police filed case in court, is it not funny?

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 10:24 AM

    Baby of Suba Anagathayak.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 10:30 AM

The problem is some times God become blind eyed & let the babies die !.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 10:44 AM

Though what happened is an absolute sin and definetily should not have happened, one should also wonder as to why this young mother reverted to such action. We Sri Lankan's walk around with our nose in the air talking about this "so called" rich culture that we're supposed to have and would look down totally upon a mother and even the offspring born out of wedlock and even corner these people in society but on the other hand would happily associate people who have been charged for corruption, murder, rape etc...Wake up you Sri Lankan hypocrits...

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 10:44 AM

TMA says that this would never happen in the west, well my friend that is because people mind their own businesses and don't look down upon people for such things but actually look down upon people who should be looked down upon. They provide love and kindness to moms facing such situations. SpaceCab what would you have done if you were that poor girl?Still looked at your daughter without a wink of sleep?? We are a nation of such hypocrits...If educated people like you are thinking on these lines I don't want to even imagine how she would have been treated in the rural areas where people don't have access to information and live in a black or white world.Hypocrits, that's all I can say.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 11:20 AM

This type of mothers are keen for their short sighted selfish sexual desires and do not worry about after effects of getting pregnant.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 11:28 AM

They belong to the same culture as the guys in Parliament.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 12:09 PM

Please dont be judgemental. There is something called Post Natal Depression that happens to new mothers specially if they are not cared by her should be support net. In SL there is no support from families for mother who have babies out of wed lock and no institution to support them as well. If it is a teen mother, probably she has no idea what to do with the baby as she is a child herself. I am against abortion but SL do not have an alternative given to girls who get pregnent. They should have a proper legal adoption system implemented and educate all people of the same. Make sure they implement a support for new mother, specially those who seems to have no one else to help them out.

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 12:12 PM

Please dont politicise this sad event. SLns still have a good heart. Isolated cases like this happen once in a while. its sad as other said we shall hope this baby will be take by a needy couple.

We dont know the mothers side so no point in blaming her.Maybe she left her kid with a burning heart. we cant say anything about her. situation is just sad. NO one to blame.

It very sad to see people always talking about party coours what ever happens. N

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 12:46 PM

I felll sorry for that mom. With what amout of pain and fear she would have done that. Let us pray for her and the lovely baby

    Thursday, 25 February 2010 01:29 PM

May be a result of seeing too much supers stars and Lots of Mahagederas
