Suspicious NGOs under probe

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is looking into the suspicious funding of certain elements in society by NGO’s and INGO’s which may destabilize the democracy of the country, Ministry sources said.

“The Foreign Ministry is looking into all aspects of information received that certain elements in society have got illegal funding from INGOs and NGOs, with a view to destabilizing democracy and the democratically elected Government in Sri Lanka,” an official with top level clearance told Daily Mirror today.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Rohitha Bogollagama while meeting with high level diplomats informed them of these developments, according to sources. “This is a serious development that the Government of Sri Lanka is very much concerned about. All possible measures will be initiated in this regard to trace such transactions, and those individuals and groups involved. Legal action will be taken against those individuals who are found to be involved directly or indirectly in such transactions,” the Minister had told a gathering of diplomats today.

Isn't it deeply ironic that the most corrupt sector (government) is looking into another's alleged 'corruption'? I think it's important for people to realize that the social service sector, consisting of both INGOs and local NGOs, have done some really vital work, for the people of Sri Lanka, over many decades. Take a trip into rural regions and you'll see far more work done by these organisations, than the government, in relief, education, empowerment and poverty alleviation. Could it not be that a part of this animosity, towards this sector, is because of its pressurizing the government for good governance, maintaining freedom of expression and valuing human rights?
