Some TUs not invited

Several trade unions in the National Labour Advisory Board (NLAC) today said that they had not been invited for the meeting between the President and trade unions that is to be held tomorrow to discuss the controversial private sector pension scheme proposed by the government.

Unions said there were rumors of only port, insurance and banking sector employees being invited for the meeting but did not confirm the allegation of a majority of trade unions in the NLAC not being invited as they had not contacted all trade unions in the Council.

“We have not been officially invited therefore we will not be attending the meeting,” said Ceylon Federation of Labour (CFL) General Secretary, T. M. R Rasseedin. He stated that in such a matter all trade unions who are members of the NLAC should be invited but that is not so this time.

President of the Inter Company Employees Union (ICEU), Wasntha Samarasinghe, said that they too would not be attending the meeting as they were not officially invited. “We would however be having a meeting of our own with other trade unions today,” he said.

The Ceylon Bank Employees Union (CBEU) confirmed they would be attending the meeting adding that they had been officially invited to meet the president this evening to discuss the proposed pension scheme for the private sector employees.

Last week, a number of trade unions, who are also members of the NLAC complained they did not know of any member who had received an official invitation for the meeting. They also added that such meetings were usually held with a prominent number of trade unions supporting the government who agreed without reading the paper that was before them. (Nabeela Hussain)
