President Maithripala Sirisena said today some media institutions were attempting to make him disappear politically even though the new government had ensured media freedom by putting an end to the disappearances of journalists.

The President said the media should report the truth with criticism through discussion and wisdom.

He expressed these views at the 60th Anniversary celebrations of the Sri Lanka Press Association held at the BMICH.

At the ceremony ten veteran journalists -- Yatiyana Pushpakumara, Sunil Madhawa Premathilake, Elmo Fernando, Ashoka Thilakaratne, Anula de Silva, Cyril Wimalasurendra, Sriya Ratnakara, S. Nadarajah Iyer, Dr. Lalitha Siribaddana and Chinthana Jayasena were felicitated.

Parliament Reforms and Mass Media Minister Gayantha Karunathilake, Provincial Councils and Local Government Deputy Minister Karunaratne Paranawithane, Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ) President K. Vikram Rao and Sri Lanka Press Association President Muditha Kariyakarawana also attended the ceremony. (Amila Priyankara)

Sir, You are also heading in the direction of your predecessor. So tread carefully.Your daughter took governments officials without having any official government positions and then your son followed to you the UN. Still we are waiting for answers on these issues. On what official capacity was your son sat in the UN general assembly? Is the Junket borne by the tax payers?Do not blame the media, They are the eyes and ears of the public.

Mr. President Media freedom is not the disappearance i think you should read something about it in deep. in a nut shell if i may, its about expressing anything about anyone and reporting about anything about anyone and not being killed for it...however if i may also point out the marvelous comic work our police carryout i dont think there will be any freedom of any such until we get some good people to protect the law i know its a far cry ,,, so please try to make it happen rather than singing about it

Aiyo Sirisena! Our journalist and media are not trying to end your political career. They want make you look good by portraying your weaknesses and corrupt practices that go against your own "Yahapalanaya".

If what media covers is not true, anyone can challenge it in the court. Please do not generalize that media does not tell the truth. Without media freedom, no democracy can survive. Sri Lanka has many censorship from its independent. All government should be transparent to have healthy democracy.

The media are only trying to show your flaws in administering Yahapalanaya, by highlighting specific wrongdoings. Be open to learn from those mistakes highlighted, Mr. President!

There is nothing called a free press or media all work to an agenda as determined by their handlers. Free press and media is a myth propagated by the West and other vested interests in order they be allowed to be given unfettered license to achieve their objectives - most based on self interest

    ihale Saturday, 10 October 2015 02:56 PM

We hat off you for building our country image in international arena... However You are also following what MR did as a dictator. Your framed photos are hanging every where in the country together with henchmens photos. The decisions UNP government are being taken seems moving against the peoples endorsement. .In short We as UNPIANs disgusted with the government ..... via DM Android App
