British Deputy Prime Minister Nicholas Clegg said Sri Lanka should emulate South Africa’s truth and reconciliation process as, “there can be no better way for Sri Lanka to heal its wounds and bring peace and unity to its entire people other than by following Mandela’s example.”

Speaking in the British Parliament Mr. Clegg said, “…in communities where people are still struggling to replace violence and conflict with peace and stability, the principles of forgiveness and reconciliation that Mandela embodied are followed by others too. Recently, for example, the House debated the alleged human rights abuses in Sri Lanka. Surely there can be no better way for that country to heal its wounds and bring peace and unity to its entire people other than by following Mandela’s example and emulating South Africa’s truth and reconciliation process.”

Freedom for all Wednesday, 11 December 2013 06:23 AM

For that Sri Lanka need a good leader like Sir Mandela not power and money hungry politicians.

    Fayad Wednesday, 11 December 2013 06:41 AM

Britishers do all blunders and rest to the world should follow Mandela

    Prometheus Wednesday, 11 December 2013 06:46 AM

Truth and reconciliation commission gave amnesty to all including the former apartheid government in order to uncover the TRUTH. But many including your British government talk of war-crimes investigations, justice etc, etc. Make up your mind. You can't have both. You can't have Justice/Punishments & Amnesty at the same time.

    Krigalan Wednesday, 11 December 2013 06:48 AM

18th amendment shows who is MR

who supported 18th amendment are traitor to SL

we dont have any option other than MR now for next 20 years

    mikee Wednesday, 11 December 2013 07:02 AM

Freedom for all - You are absolutely correct but the question remains whether we can just imagine a leader of his calibre. 99.9% of our politicians are selfish scoundrels.

Pol Tokkahj Wednesday, 11 December 2013 12:54 PM

    Ravin Wednesday, 11 December 2013 07:09 AM

Surely Mr. Clegg has missed the history class. Mandela wouldn't be there if it wasn't Britain.

    lkboy Wednesday, 11 December 2013 07:09 AM

was the same followed for Northern Ireland?

    Cobra Wednesday, 11 December 2013 07:31 AM

    Iqbal Wednesday, 11 December 2013 07:31 AM

Unsolicited advice. Keep off our territory

    Fact Wednesday, 11 December 2013 08:14 AM

If Mandela says this also you guys wont accept...you people always try to put fault in others.

Sug Madique Wednesday, 11 December 2013 08:17 AM

Those who call for the truth and justice for victims don't actually want it. All they want is the blood of the man who killed prabakaran.

    Kyber Wednesday, 11 December 2013 01:57 PM

britain is a bunch of US worshipping hypocrites...one moment its "hang mandela" and the next they "advice" other countries to follow the ways of Mandela

    Fawzan Wednesday, 11 December 2013 02:04 PM

Agreed with Fayad. When British give freedom to Sri Lanka, they should have put back the country as it was prior to their intervention. Those fellows unified 2 seperate ruling area as one and we are suffering because of it

    FOX Wednesday, 11 December 2013 08:42 AM

Fayad says! should follow BIN LADEN

    C.K.Lankaputhra Wednesday, 11 December 2013 02:06 PM

We don't bother whats happening in other countries. What we want is Law & order, democracy and justice in Sri Lanka. Not authoritarianism, nepotism, corruption and murderers.

    johan Wednesday, 11 December 2013 08:53 AM

Mandela is coming in the way of Mother Thersa.Dont compare them with
    our politicians

    Deepan Wednesday, 11 December 2013 08:55 AM

MR is forever because of the 18th amendment .
There is no effort for reconciliation. Rather every effort has taken and implementation is taking place to undermine the tamils.
It is very sad, Our country will pay the price for it.

    5555 Wednesday, 11 December 2013 08:58 AM

Racism was fought by Nelson Mandela ...
So you guys cant expect the buddist racist...to be him..never will happen...this country is a death trap to the minority religions...

    ram Wednesday, 11 December 2013 08:59 AM

talking doesn’t going to work with Sri Lanka only need action .

charmaine Mathews Wednesday, 11 December 2013 09:06 AM

OMG these British people i tell you. They are trying to tell us to see to the people who were effected by the war. Have they forgotten that when they were ruling Sri Lanka who were the slaves to them. Man i tell you these stupid British. It is because of them we have problems in our country.

    Mason Wednesday, 11 December 2013 03:16 PM

Do not taint the memory of a noble statesman. Petty opportunist politicians are unfit to follow his example.

Kanchane Athauda Wednesday, 11 December 2013 09:18 AM

I'm not a big fan of this guy. I don't like the way that he interferes the other countries. But regarding this statement, I'm afraid I can't find anything to disagree. Our leaders have a lot to learn from Nelson Mandela. How to make a change, how to abolish fraud, how to become a father to a nation and a lot more. Nicolas Clegg has all the rights to says so because he is a fine leader in his country's point of view even it is bad for us. How unlucky we are? Our leaders are obviously bad for the international and worse for our mother land itself. But they dare to call themselves patriots. Huh.

Sonali De Silva Wednesday, 11 December 2013 09:40 AM

“there can be no better way for Britain to heal its wounds and bring peace and unity to the entire people in Iraq other than by following Mandela’s example.”

    PRASANNAJIT Wednesday, 11 December 2013 09:47 AM

Don't worry , we have sent an aircraft full off politicos for the funeral of Mandela to learn what Mandela had taught.

    Sarath Wednesday, 11 December 2013 03:29 PM

BRITISH BULL DOGS MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.

    Nims Wednesday, 11 December 2013 09:47 AM

Mr Clegg, you are quite correct. But don't forget the same thing applicable to your country too.

Be Fair Wednesday, 11 December 2013 10:03 AM

You if chaps can stop meddling in our affairs, I believe we will be able to get this thing done.
I think Mandela said that to "do your own way"

    Hobbes Wednesday, 11 December 2013 10:41 AM

Sorry David but we are merely following the hallowed British example of 'divide and rule' which was administerd with ruthless efficiency for well nigh 150 years in SL and other Dominions, most of which the Great British Empire left in political turmoil and economic disarray when the sun finally (and mercifully) set on your long and vicious rule.

Sug Madique Wednesday, 11 December 2013 10:56 AM

How long did Britain take to heal the wounds and bring peace in N Ireland? Why don't they measure SL also by the same yardstick?

    Nodrog Wednesday, 11 December 2013 10:58 AM

There seems to be a frenzy to see who can be the biggest human rights campaigner all for the sake of electoral advantage. This is pure unadulterated hypocrisy.

    tony Wednesday, 11 December 2013 11:06 AM

OH! SHUT UP WILL YOU.WHY DONT YOU FELLAS FOLLOW MANDELA PROPHECY

    Bizu Thursday, 12 December 2013 10:30 AM

sound is good but only happen in the imagination

Sylvia Haik Wednesday, 11 December 2013 11:37 AM

Not so long ago Britain was calling Mandela a terrorist and some of the present ministers carried placards in their student days shouting "Hang Mandela and all ANC members".
