A A A

The Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council has passed a regulation banning private tuition classes for children between the ages of 5 to 16 years on Full Moon Poya days and on Sundays between 8am to 2pm, the Council said.

The draft legislation by the Governor of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council was tabled by the Chairman of the Provincial Council and passed unanimously. The Chief Minsiter said the Governor proposed the motion to enable the children to attend Dhamma schools on Sundays and religious observances on the Poya Days.

Any individual who violate the motion will be liable to a fine not exceeding Rs 5000 and a six month rigorous imprisonment. (Daily Mirror online)

This logic is humbug. This means that the muslims and hindus who attend the schools mentioned are living devils. Controlling the devil in ourselves is self discipline, values and principles we cultivate while growing up while recogonising the difference between good and bad. A father using abusive language in the presence of his kids creates a culture that is passed on to the next generation unless the kid realizes that his father is "bad", which in reality does not happen. Is this "devil influence" from school? Why is Finland rated the most honest country in the world, while having the lowest attendance in church?

Very good move! This should be done in the whole country. Ban tuition up to grade 8! Tuition makes a child's school life miserable.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 01:43 AM

All those religiously brainwashed people who have commented here approving this idiotic move, let me wish good luck to you all. Religious brainwashing has not done any good for anyone. I am a Buddhist but I don't see the need to send my child to religious brainwashing or private tuition on a Sunday but they can enjoy some free time with the family. However if I lose my rights as a parent to make that decision myself, but have to abide by the law passed by religious fanatics, then of course I have to find a province that still has those freedoms , and if the whole country is going down the Taliban path, then I need to find a different country.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 02:57 AM

First we must understand why parents send their children for tuition. Obviously, the school education is not sufficient. Until and unless the school education is streamlined to the levels expected, parents have to ensure that their children are made ready for exams. My daughter is studying in a leading school in Colombo. Without tuition she cannot survive. Most of the time, they are free as the teachers are absent or busy with something else. The authorities must not take short sighted actions without looking at the whole picture.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 03:05 AM

Isnt there already a law banning tuition classes on Sundays and poya days? Then why is WJM re-imposing it? It just shows making laws in this country are useless - laws are meant to be broken!

    Friday, 07 May 2010 03:08 AM

No country in the world has elevated their socio-economical standards by passing more and more religiously motivated laws. We are not going to be an exception. Religious laws are not going to address the root causes of the perceived problem that those laws are purporting to address.
BTW what about children of parents of other faiths, mixed faiths and non-religious? Do they all have to submit themselves to such religious laws? How come a child as young as 5 be branded in their parents religion? Where is this country heading?

    Friday, 07 May 2010 03:46 AM

Faqi, I don't say morality must be legislated. Legislators must create grounds for children to get moral education, and that's SG PC is doing.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 03:56 AM

Muslims too have sunday school, but as for Atheists, you have a class once a year, on 1 April!

    Friday, 07 May 2010 04:45 AM

Stupid decision-all will start classes at 3pm & go on till midnight.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 04:46 AM

well done government. this is a appreciated move. some stupid workaholics cannot understand the importance of this. its not about religion only. its about giving children a break. its not compulsory to go to temple. its their own choice..

    Friday, 07 May 2010 05:50 AM

This is a wise decision. Children under age 16 should not be forced into tuition. You don't need to go to tuition classes to get island ranks in O/L. What they need is not tuition classes but health, intelligence and motivation. These children under age 16 should be given their play time if you want them to be really healthy and intelligent. I didn't go to any tuition until A/L and had the score.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 06:02 AM

Royal/ Thomian matches always held on Thur/Fri/ Sat never on sundays, this Particular christian school allows the children to attend church service and sunday school. If this is not prioritized, children of the future generation will be no different to living devils!

    Friday, 07 May 2010 06:27 AM

Saliya Wickramasuriy - You are contradicting yourself. Banning tuition classes on the phases of the moon is not going to improve the morality of children. It's left to the parents and teachers to impart that knowledge of 'right & wrong' to children on a daily basis by example, good behavior etc.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 07:04 AM

1st time in my life I heard children banned from conducting their educational activities on a holiday.

Man, were are we heading, Making fools of all the children and send them to paliament????

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 10:33 PM

Saliya Wickramasuriy - Morality cannot be legislated. It's left to the parents/teachers of the children to teach them ethics. Morality has nothing to do with banning tuition classes on the phases of the moon. We live in the 21st century, its time people opened their eyes to reality!

    Friday, 07 May 2010 07:53 AM

Ritigala - Agree with your comments. Whether to send children for tuition or not should be left to the parents; the government should just butt out ; they have no right to dictate to families how they bring up their children as long as they are law abiding. Religion should be a private belief and not legislated, then we become like Iran where a Mullah said last week that earth quakes are caused by women exposing their hair. It all gets too silly.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 08:36 AM

wE HOPE THE DICISION TAKEN BY THE SABARAGAMUWA PC WILL NOT BE HAVE THE SAME FATE LIKE WHAT HAPPEND IN KELANIYA

    Friday, 07 May 2010 08:49 AM

The morons who justify banning of education activities during a holiday do not have children. Or they are so rich they can get tutors to their own homes and cunduct classses.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 09:48 AM

To grease the palms, the tuition masters will jack up the rates they charge each student.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 09:48 AM

I think it should be the other way round to believe in Gods in this modern age with so much scientific knowledge to explain.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 09:53 AM

Very well said. In fact the GOV Sab Prov is VJMoo whose actions in the past few years was not above criticism. It is the fathers/elders who should set an example - not use law or force in the young minds.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 10:00 AM

There are two things here - moral education & school education. You cannot stop one and force the other. Firstly school Education System must improve - The PCs are taking the easy way out without improving school education to fool the public.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 10:01 AM

How many times are they going to ban and lift the tuition classes? If they do that once and for all they should do it on a true research study whether students hate that and the parents force them to. If the parents force and spend money when the pupils don't grasp anything they should be punished- not a felony but a fine say some amount like here stated five thousand or more.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 10:05 AM

About 79.7% of the Finns are Christians, true they dont attend church regularly. Research about Finns law, education, economy policy etc no wonder Finland has reached this position. This is about Sri Lanka!! Sin at every level is in extremes, verge of breaking down. This is why spiritual teachings are important. Schools just teach the syllabus, but religious institutions teach about living Good life. People are caught up in the rat race, sadly they will miss the point of living, at the end of life!

    Friday, 07 May 2010 10:08 AM

Buddhist education or for that matter any religious education is not the need now but all religious education on moral ethical needs of a child is the need of the hour; if we divide education on the basis of religion again and again, we are making the century old mistake of segregating children on religious bigotry. The tuition need of a child is not necessarily on the inadequacy of the child's progress report but on the thickness of the purse and dignity of the parents. I have personal experience as a private tutor in and around Colombo for the last five years.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 10:52 AM

Yes Sir...When whole world is working we are on leave. Every Poyaday we loose Millions !. Religion is the root of MOST of the evils. God save me from your followers !.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 11:13 AM

Religion and Law are opposite to one another. How you define it depends on your spiritual maturity. Law will convict a person, religion will set him free from guilty. Example today we see how even leaders are taking rash decisions due to inability to overcome guilt, thereby taking even worse decisions. . Brainwash means, cleaning the junk and to instill a clear Conscious mind, definitely not the jargon spoken by people with a narrow understanding!

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 11:21 AM

Lord Buddha never preached Bodhi Poojas, banning cinemas, alchohol, tuition on Poya days, banning sale of meat but selling fish on Poya days, planting buddha statues on every nook and corner of the roads, blasting pirith on loudspeakers etc...The true buddhist is one who can practice the precepts of the noble path and control his desires on any day and not only on a Poya day.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 10:13 AM

How will tuition master turned Education minister handle the rest of the island!Interesting to see the poacher turned conservationist taking some worthwhile action.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 10:29 AM

As soon as these tution masters oil the palms of the Sabaragamuwa officials, this will stop after that free for all tution classes spring up all over the provinces and you can see the broad grin on the faces of the palm oil goons, good luck anyway, only the pupils and parents will suffer...

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 10:39 AM

It is a fact that without tuition classes you cannot pass will our juniors end up a bunch of donkeys

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 10:46 AM

True and with the 51% failed in 2009 O'Ls their will be more to join the donkeys who are legislating this.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 10:47 AM

Let the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council also pass some regulations making it compulsory for all teachers to cover a specified amount of lectures in class during school hours, and for Schools Inspectors to pay surprise visits to schools during sessions. Otherwise the children will be the real losers.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 10:50 AM

Exactly smart, this is something they are overlooking! Most of the tution classes are conducted by the very same teachers.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 10:56 AM

Rules and laws are for the masses only. No such rules for politicos and their bureaucratic officials to ensure good governance or productivity.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 10:57 AM

with that six hours students won't be able to pass the exam. it's matter of managing time. donkeys won't pass the exam even if they studied 24 hours a day.
i am not much interest about the poya day decision but sunday it is a very good decision. other provinces also should implement this. students who are in year 11 can take leaves if they want. Other students this is not big impact since all are ready to exam in year 11. GOOD MOVE...

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 10:58 AM

I think it is not a wise decision. 1. What about non-Buddhists? do they have to follow this rule too? 2. What about the so called "individual tuition"? those who can pay a lot would still have tuition on these days and only the poorer students attending "mass" classes would be affected. 3. Nothing could be achieved by trying to get the kids into any religion by force.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 11:00 AM

GOOD FOR CHRISTIAN CHILDRENS TOO-IF THEY IMPLEMENT THIS ALL OVER THE SRI LANKA

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 11:06 AM

So the brains of the students dont work during the 4 phases of the moon?. Probably like that of the politicians. Its no wonder that the country is in a mess. Irrational thinking.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 11:16 AM

very good decision .. this will stop students who leave sunday schools for private tution classes...

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 10:12 AM

it is a very good move by the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council. I hope this will be implemented in other parts of the country as well.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 11:35 AM

Yes there are concerns. How they are going to implement this in north east?

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 11:56 AM

What about Muslims & Atheists like me ?. everybody should be treated equally !.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 12:40 PM

English class is going to be dead. those politicians will send their children top school , poor will get suffer. this is like criminal law not using on Mervin Silva and used on SF.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 12:47 PM

Surely there is a problem with how tuition classes are operated, not to mention in other countries there nothing called tuition classes apart from school.

But im concerned as to why this was implemented. If the objective is to forcefully teach Buddism, its purpose is lost. As they say "You Can Only Take a Horse to the River-You Cannot Make it Drink"

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 12:57 PM

you are smart, All the teachers should be given "targets" and those who produce good outcome should be rewarded( including financial and promotions).

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 01:42 PM

'I'm the king of the mountain' New rules everyday.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 01:46 PM

That is absurd. You must address the reason for students to go for Private tuition not stop these classes. The reason is students are not taught in the school class and hence this must be corrected. Otherwise it is stupidity and does not help the student.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 01:59 PM

Ah! it s good move that the Sabaragamuwa PC has taken. Hope other PCs of SL too do the same. At the same what about this CRICKET? These so called Big matches and other kinds of Sports, sports meets and other Social activities should be stopped.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 02:40 PM

De Silva didn't get the point. There is a global tendency all over the world now that children be given moral education.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 04:12 PM

Is this country turning into some extreme cuckoo-land?

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 04:53 PM

Provincial Council, should mind their own business. If the parents want to pay and send their children to tuition its there right. The parents are responsible for their children, not the Provincial Council.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 09:15 PM

This is a stupid dicision. With the current competition children actually benefit from tuition. No one should force someone to follow religious activities. This should always be a voluntary decision. The Council should have asked for the public's opinion, before implementing this sort of decision, which is not going to help anyone.
