This logic is humbug. This means that the muslims and hindus who attend the schools mentioned are living devils. Controlling the devil in ourselves is self discipline, values and principles we cultivate while growing up while recogonising the difference between good and bad. A father using abusive language in the presence of his kids creates a culture that is passed on to the next generation unless the kid realizes that his father is "bad", which in reality does not happen. Is this "devil influence" from school? Why is Finland rated the most honest country in the world, while having the lowest attendance in church?

Very good move! This should be done in the whole country. Ban tuition up to grade 8! Tuition makes a child's school life miserable.

All those religiously brainwashed people who have commented here approving this idiotic move, let me wish good luck to you all. Religious brainwashing has not done any good for anyone. I am a Buddhist but I don't see the need to send my child to religious brainwashing or private tuition on a Sunday but they can enjoy some free time with the family. However if I lose my rights as a parent to make that decision myself, but have to abide by the law passed by religious fanatics, then of course I have to find a province that still has those freedoms , and if the whole country is going down the Taliban path, then I need to find a different country.

First we must understand why parents send their children for tuition. Obviously, the school education is not sufficient. Until and unless the school education is streamlined to the levels expected, parents have to ensure that their children are made ready for exams. My daughter is studying in a leading school in Colombo. Without tuition she cannot survive. Most of the time, they are free as the teachers are absent or busy with something else. The authorities must not take short sighted actions without looking at the whole picture.

Isnt there already a law banning tuition classes on Sundays and poya days? Then why is WJM re-imposing it? It just shows making laws in this country are useless - laws are meant to be broken!

No country in the world has elevated their socio-economical standards by passing more and more religiously motivated laws. We are not going to be an exception. Religious laws are not going to address the root causes of the perceived problem that those laws are purporting to address.
BTW what about children of parents of other faiths, mixed faiths and non-religious? Do they all have to submit themselves to such religious laws? How come a child as young as 5 be branded in their parents religion? Where is this country heading?

This is a wise decision. Children under age 16 should not be forced into tuition. You don't need to go to tuition classes to get island ranks in O/L. What they need is not tuition classes but health, intelligence and motivation. These children under age 16 should be given their play time if you want them to be really healthy and intelligent. I didn't go to any tuition until A/L and had the score.

Saliya Wickramasuriy - You are contradicting yourself. Banning tuition classes on the phases of the moon is not going to improve the morality of children. It's left to the parents and teachers to impart that knowledge of 'right & wrong' to children on a daily basis by example, good behavior etc.

Saliya Wickramasuriy - Morality cannot be legislated. It's left to the parents/teachers of the children to teach them ethics. Morality has nothing to do with banning tuition classes on the phases of the moon. We live in the 21st century, its time people opened their eyes to reality!

Ritigala - Agree with your comments. Whether to send children for tuition or not should be left to the parents; the government should just butt out ; they have no right to dictate to families how they bring up their children as long as they are law abiding. Religion should be a private belief and not legislated, then we become like Iran where a Mullah said last week that earth quakes are caused by women exposing their hair. It all gets too silly.

How many times are they going to ban and lift the tuition classes? If they do that once and for all they should do it on a true research study whether students hate that and the parents force them to. If the parents force and spend money when the pupils don't grasp anything they should be punished- not a felony but a fine say some amount like here stated five thousand or more.

About 79.7% of the Finns are Christians,true they dont attend church regularly. Research about Finns law, education, economy policy etc no wonder Finland has reached this position. This is about Sri Lanka!! Sin at every level is in extremes, verge of breaking down. This is why spiritual teachings are important. Schools just teach the syllabus, but religious institutions teach about living Good life. People are caught up in the rat race, sadly they will miss the point of living, at the end of life!

Buddhist education or for that matter any religious education is not the need now but all religious education on moral ethical needs of a child is the need of the hour; if we divide education on the basis of religion again and again, we are making the century old mistake of segregating children on religious bigotry. The tuition need of a child is not necessarily on the inadequacy of the child's progress report but on the thickness of the purse and dignity of the parents. I have personal experience as a private tutor in and around Colombo for the last five years.

Religion and Law are opposite to one another. How you define it depends on your spiritual maturity. Law will convict a person, religion will set him free from guilty. Example today we see how even leaders are taking rash decisions due to inability to overcome guilt, thereby taking even worse decisions. . Brainwash means, cleaning the junk and to instill a clear Conscious mind, definitely not the jargon spoken by people with a narrow understanding!

Lord Buddha never preached Bodhi Poojas, banning cinemas, alchohol, tuition on Poya days, banning sale of meat but selling fish on Poya days, planting buddha statues on every nook and corner of the roads, blasting pirith on loudspeakers etc...The true buddhist is one who can practice the precepts of the noble path and control his desires on any day and not only on a Poya day.

Let the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council also pass some regulations making it compulsory for all teachers to cover a specified amount of lectures in class during school hours, and for Schools Inspectors to pay surprise visits to schools during sessions. Otherwise the children will be the real losers.

with that six hours students won't be able to pass the exam. it's matter of managing time. donkeys won't pass the exam even if they studied 24 hours a day.
i am not much interest about the poya day decision but sunday it is a very good decision. other provinces also should implement this. students who are in year 11 can take leaves if they want. Other students this is not big impact since all are ready to exam in year 11. GOOD MOVE...

I think it is not a wise decision. 1. What about non-Buddhists? do they have to follow this rule too? 2. What about the so called "individual tuition"? those who can pay a lot would still have tuition on these days and only the poorer students attending "mass" classes would be affected. 3. Nothing could be achieved by trying to get the kids into any religion by force.

Surely there is a problem with how tuition classes are operated, not to mention in other countries there nothing called tuition classes apart from school.
But im concerned as to why this was implemented. If the objective is to forcefully teach Buddism, its purpose is lost. As they say "You Can Only Take a Horse to the River-You Cannot Make it Drink"

That is absurd. You must address the reason for students to go for Private tuition not stop these classes. The reason is students are not taught in the school class and hence this must be corrected. Otherwise it is stupidity and does not help the student.

Provincial Council, should mind their own business. If the parents want to pay and send their children to tuition its there right. The parents are responsible for their children, not the Provincial Council.

This is a stupid dicision. With the current competition children actually benefit from tuition. No one should force someone to follow religious activities. This should always be a voluntary decision. The Council should have asked for the public's opinion, before implementing this sort of decision, which is not going to help anyone.
