Female sex workers dislike keeping condoms with them so as to avoid being arrested by the police, officials said yesterday.

Addressing an awareness propgramme at Galkiriyagama, Public Health Inspect U.G. Jayasundera said the possession of condoms made it easy for a woman to be suspected as a sex worker.

He said this was one of the main reasons why sex workers dislike carrying condoms with them.

Mr. Jayasundera said the use of condoms is recommended for the prevention of deadly diseases such as HIV and AIDS.

“There is prostitution in Sri Lanka.  There are also foreign sex workers here.   Once a sex worker is arrested, condoms seized from her are used as case productions.  Therefore, they now avoid keeping condoms with them. This is a serious problem. This will lead to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases,” he said.

Mr. Jayasundera said health authorities are discussing these matters with police officials. (Kushan Jayawardane)

If my wife does not want to have children and she will not take the pill, but keeps condoms in her hand bag just in case, & the police check her out and finds condoms in her bag is she classed as a prostitute? To me that sounds like "deprivation of privacy/liberty. S/L is living in very dark ages & has a long, long way to go to catch up with the rest of the world.

Excuse me??? how can you prove that someone is a sex worker by producing condoms that was with them? If they check me I always have a condom in my purse. Does that mean I'm a male sex worker???

    morala Tuesday, 11 December 2012 07:10 AM

no need these sex workers; just get married 2 or 3 then it wont be a problem for srilanka

Calistus Jayatilleke Tuesday, 11 December 2012 07:05 AM

Just because a woman keeps a condom, how can anyone in a proper frame of mind accuse her of prostitution. Anyway, there seems to be some aversion to using condoms most probably men do not condone it and women tend to condemn it.
