Sea water contaminates water wells in Jaffna

Water wells used for consumption in the Jaffna District have been contaminated due to the wells mixing with sea water, Parliament was informed today.

Jaffna District UNP MP Mrs. Vijayakala Maheswaran said in Parliament that the access to drinking water facilities had worsened as a result. She said that the government should take steps to rectify the situation as a soon as possible. Karainagar, Ariyalai, Velvetithurai, Wadukkodai and the island areas are the worst hit.

She stressed the need to use bowsers to provide water to people in these areas.

Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardane who was present in the House said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had taken steps to implement water projects in the north after 70 years. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)

Lime stone excavation will result of sea water contamination to drinking water. Cement is important ,but it will cost more for water in long run!

Jaffna water problem can be solved by Eranamadhu Tank water. Stop supply water for drinking from ground water system. This is the main cause for ground water turn to salt. Also Eranamadhu should link with Mahavali River.

congratulations madam,If you visit through out the islands youcan see the small tanks are constructed for the purpose of protect the water resources in the island.
