Make him an MP or a 'brand-ambassador' for Sri Lanka.

    Monday, 12 April 2010 06:37 PM

Shame! This is not the first time that a sportsman has tarnished Sri Lanka's name.

    Monday, 12 April 2010 06:52 PM

    Hmmm... just sad ...

    Monday, 12 April 2010 07:59 PM

Shame on our country! What did you take? Couldn't you have worked hard and bought it?

    Monday, 12 April 2010 08:09 PM

Please get into local politics and make 'big' money ...

    Monday, 12 April 2010 08:22 PM

There are people like you still spoil the country's name.

    Monday, 12 April 2010 08:52 PM

This fellow is a disgrace to our country.

    Monday, 12 April 2010 10:35 PM

These rogues bring shame to Sri Lanka. ... His passport should be withdrawn, for few years. Of course he will have a 'good' explanation, on arrival - 'mistaken identity' / 'his rugger capability was a threat' / 'he meant to pay for the item, but got distracted' / 'a misunderstanding' etc. .. etc. ..

    Monday, 12 April 2010 11:27 PM

Another shameful act by a Lankan ... following the 'diplomat who returned from Japan.' Please bring in new rules for all sportsman and government officials, who represent the country beyond our shores.

    Monday, 12 April 2010 11:44 PM

This is disgusting ... people like this should be banned for life. They simply ruin Sri Lanka's image ... As a Sri Lankan living in Singapore, it is particularly sad to hear this ...

    Monday, 12 April 2010 11:55 PM

The media promptly publishes the names and other details of ordinary people like Samantha, but hide the details of diplomats and politicians, whenever they get into trouble for damaging the country's reputation. E.g. Re. the Sri Lankan envoy who returned from Japan. Why such double standards?

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 12:01 AM

Example set by diplomat in Japan!

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 12:13 AM

Luckily he was caught during an official tour ... otherwise sure to have got 3 strokes from the 'rotan' and 3 months in Changi prison! These guys dirty our country's name ...

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:01 AM

Sad situation. Sometime back a Sri lankan Airlines senior pilot also shoplifted and was arrested by the singapore police. I remember they had to get a standby crew member to operate the flight back . He cannot enter singapore to date.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:02 AM

I blame the officials! Most of these young sportsman venturing out of the country for the first time could get lured to the magical material world which they have been shunned and deprived in their homeland. They should have being adequately warned on these temptations before they embark on such endeavors.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:11 AM

Shoplifting is a bit of another sport for these guys. It is unfortunate that he did not know that there is a tough rule in Singapore on this. Poor fellow.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:35 AM

I'm sure that it was one of bolla clan disguising themselves as "dip low mats"

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:36 AM

who lifted painting from JAPANESE house
    why don`t you name him
here in OZZIELAND there is name and shame policy. whether Culprit is supreme court judge, doctor MP, primier or prime minister or ambassador. once chief justice was shamed FOR DRINK DRIVING.

    please follow ozzie example
name politicians any body not only sportsman

    James

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:40 AM

Please make him a minister. He is qualified for politics in Sri Lanka.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:41 AM

MAKE HIM THE PRESIDENT OF SRI LANKA... HE HAS THE QUALIFICATION FOR IT..... GOOD LUCK BROTHER COUNTRY IS WAITING FOR U

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:41 AM

    Hmmm....,Some food for thought indeed.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:49 AM

Rugby players must not tarnish the good names of rugby players like President sons, especially Yoshitha who has been recently selected to the national team.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 02:17 AM

    Hello Sinhala European,

Crime is crime which ever way it is committed. Don't you come to the rescue for someone who has robbed. Whether he robs 5 cents or $5,000 it is same. Don't feel ashamed of yourself to come to the defence of a robber?

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 02:26 AM

They follow the Politicians ,diplomats and the leaders of this country..The problem is not with one individual, this the attitude in general in the country.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 02:27 AM

He may have done this as a fun as he do in school time. We should not put blame entirely on him. The authorities who send the team should better educated them in this regards. Also school, teachers and our society itself should start to think on this. Make this as the last such incident in the history.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 02:35 AM

HE SHOULD BE AWARDED A MEDAL ALONG WITH THE DIPLOMAT FROM SRI LANKA FOR DOING AN ACT OF LIFTING THINGS FROM FOREIGN COUNTRIES AND GETTING CAUGHT. Poor show

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 02:39 AM

Agree with you. No names are mentioned if the person who involved is a power ful person. doesn't matter even if he robes millions or billions, doesn't matter even if the name is appearing on the printed documents, they will erase it ans just say xx and yy did that. Double standards Media should get the MS treatment

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 02:41 AM

There is some form of dishonesty practiced by the people at the very top in Sri Lanka!!! We have to start the cleaning process from the "top"

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 02:50 AM

Give him a national list MP post

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:10 AM

No point in blaming this young kid . He has learned this from our VIP politicians.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:22 AM

ban him for life , disgrace allround, sorry for this youngster , but country's reputation is more important.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:25 AM

we have history of shop lifting robbing in oversea army officer diplomat sportsman

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:25 AM

"Rugby the game of Hooligans, Played by Gentlemen" those were the good old days..! Shame, strike his with a lifetime ban for the shame he has caused Sri Lanka!

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:33 AM

Songapore gov should fine him ( caning) this is only way rest of hte sri lankan traverlers will not do any crime in other countries

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:36 AM

Like karuna ? I remember not so long ago a prominant army officer was cought in USA , and deported and now he is holding a high post

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:39 AM

Nothing will happen to him. Not een a punishment from the club or the rugby board. We all know which club he represents and also we know who the captain and the influential team in that team.

    wait and see.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:40 AM

Sri Lanka couldn't hit the headlines in Rugger and the majority of our nation didn't give too much thought for this game. Thus, MR's son got the chance to slip in while there maybe better ruggerites who can be an obstacle for the opposition players. NOW WE ARE IN THE HEADLINES

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:41 AM

Navy captain should take some responsibility for the poor discipline shown by his teammates. Sadly he might not even know his name.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:58 AM

Unfortunately he is not the son of our own V V I P.If that happens from such person there wont be any publish of any name.dont forget..not only Ruggerites..few srilanka cricketers also get caught in England during past !!!!!!

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:59 AM

Judge, are you blaming him because he got caught? If so, I do hope that you are not a judge in Sri Lanka.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:59 AM

Very proud of srilankans....Where ever srilankans go every where problem...pooruththa atha arinna baha....

here comes our next parliamentary election candidate..

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:36 AM

No difference between him and our politicians and also the brothers and family. except that it is done differently. Check the swiss banks accounts of two Sri Lankan nationals opened before the Presidential elections and then you will know who they are and from where the monies. came.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:45 AM

What is this bloddy cake coming up on the news???

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:51 AM

Sad. He also happens to be a Ranaviru from the Navy

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:52 AM

Not sure why certain comments are targeting the politics. Are these comments going to be the same if a foreigner got caught doing the same in Sri Lanka.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:55 AM

A sad reflection of the society we live in.WE are a sick society. When people overwhelmingly vote some notorious characters into power irrespective of their damning deeds whom are we to blame. These people lift the country .In this context shop lifting by the rugger player cannot make any sensational news.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:59 AM

why? why is sri-lankans doing this? You are representing
the country in sports, and do things like this?
Its a shame for trhe country. not for you. cos for you this may
    be a bad day.

Singapore is not sri lanka dear friend.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:59 AM

The sports ministry to bring in a ruling that all sportsmen leaving the country, undergo orientation on proper conduct when they are representing the country.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 05:01 AM

He is a key player in rugby team. MR son also playing navy rugby team. May be this is a trap made by .............. . ? Fill in the blanks

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 05:03 AM

Do not insult our Srilankan piliticians.

    British piliticians are worst .

Nicking tax payers money as bogus expenses for years, including party leaders & cabinet ministers

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 05:22 AM

This is the reason Sri Lanka is a country of bogus buddhists where everything is preached but not practiced.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 05:31 AM

Why are there so much insults & sarcassam pointing fingers at others over this incident ???????
People, lets see how we could put such behaviour right in persons with weakness.

Have You & I failed towards society ??
    Lets be rationale.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 05:48 AM

This guy from the Sri Lankan Navy?

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 06:10 AM

President should directly involve into this.. Please rescue him as you did to Mervin, Wimal, Gota and Basil

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 06:26 AM

This gentleman is a member of Navy and got in to the team by influence, We are proud of you sailor.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 06:31 AM

He should be in Sri Lanka Diplomatic service.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 06:48 AM

    Prouyd to be Sri Lankan

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 07:04 AM

This guy can't even shoplift without getting caught... in singapore. He will never survive in our political scene.

It is a disgrace to our whole country that a person who is sent to represent our country should turn out to be a petty thief. Shame on the sports ministry and minister for choosing people of this caliber to represent our country.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 07:10 AM

sumtime back a Sri Lankan Airlines Senior Captain also got caught for shoplifting while on duty,But he kept on working as usual holding Managerial posts in the Airline but barred from entering Singapore. He even managed to get his Son in as a Pilot though he disgraced the entire Airline and the COuntry.......

So this Sportsmen ,,, if he s got the right connection doesnt matter the disgrace he has done for the country he still can play ... its all about Whome you know.... there....What a THIRD CLASS ACT!!!

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 07:11 AM

also I heard now the same senior Captain is now back with Mihin Lanka as a CEO.... hahha he is getting promotions after shoplifting.....

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 07:21 AM

It's not a big deal, when the big people does things in big way no one is taking such issues.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 07:40 AM

these kind of players should be banned from sri lankan team or should be given hard time. so that others wont repeat it. this tarnishes the whole image of sri lankan sports

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 08:08 AM

i wonder he suffers from Kleptomania. its better to refer to a pscho doctor than scolding him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 08:09 AM

Very true. Lets take the swiss bank accounts and the properties in the USA and sri lanka first.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 08:09 AM

    James..i like your idea...
but our list will be so huge that we will need a seperate database for that...and mind you everyday there will be 100s included in it.

    Charles

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 08:14 AM

Mext send a SHOPLIFTING SIDE abroad

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 08:23 AM

By reporting the Samatha incident, the media are sure there will be no white van episode.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 08:55 AM

He has only shoplifted; can't be something big. Here they rob whole houses, as per a recent news paper report. So I think he needs more training to be an MP!

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 08:55 AM

Watch your words Naufer. Don't disrespect the highest office in this country. People like you stand in the way of progress in this country. Even this shoplifter is better than you are !

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 09:02 AM

May be he is an anti UPA

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 09:04 AM

If the newspapers have the guts to publish the names of the real crooks who are the POLITICIANS,it will go in to 100 pages.

Samantha, you didn't bring any shame to this country, you are just a sprat. Whales have escaped. So keep your chin up and say I AM SORRY. don't do it again.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 09:07 AM

Congratulations now you Graduated from the ranks of Ordinary Citizen to Politician.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 09:07 AM

You people never criticise the real crooks ,You Chicken s..t

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 09:36 AM

Coming from a Country where cheating has become a social norm, he has not done anything wrong...not only Politicians and the State Sector people, the biggest rouges in this Country are in the Private Sector.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 10:22 AM

Thilak Attanayake is the name of the diplomat a political appointee by UPFA.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 10:57 AM

Since the top to the bottom of the country are crookes, declare shop-lifting as the national sport of Sri Lanka. We have only one rival, It is non other than GREECE, Recently EU has to bail out $65 billions to recover GREECE from bankruptcy and that tells the extent of corruption. In notime we will beat them.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 11:11 AM

This player got lured into trying to possess Ill-gotten goods. Haven't most of the politicians & their stooges thrived on ill-gotten goods? Otherwise how could a non-entity like Weerawansa got money to put up such elaborate propaganda for his election campaign and build a palatial residence?

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 11:20 AM

What about the Vote Lifters ?.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 11:36 AM

First the officials should have warned the team of the laws in Singapore. It is one of the most disciplined places on Earth .There are cameras planted in every nook and corner.I am sure this guy did not know it.He may have tried it here in our country and got away many times and thus did not think of the seriousness of this crime out of this place being the typical frog in the well.
Now that he has got caught he should be disciplined .This is very important and will serve a as a lesson to him and others in sport.
And yes he is just a small guy who was caught up in the material world ,what about all around us and above us who are so dishonest and pilfering in millions and millions of taxpayers money?

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 11:40 AM

yes you are correct. It was Pujitha Jayakody

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 12:06 PM

I think this was his graduation requirement to become a minister... so now he can be a Sri Lankan minister. Boga can "Demand" Singapore retratc all charges.. to this distinguish product of Sri Lanka....

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 12:27 PM

Let's make him minister for Foreign Trade

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 12:56 PM

Sure he will be made the skipper for the next tournament. I am a bit curious, what did you steal men? Was it kiri-piti for your child??

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:27 PM

Machan Samantha, looks like you are following the foot steps of your big boss.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:56 PM

When politicians rob the country of Billions and go scott free and even get titles of houour they set a very bad example. Things should be made right from top to bottom. Indiscipline in the Banana Republic of Srilanka unlike the Republic of Singapore.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 02:10 PM

They are given a travel allowence when they go abroad... so th egovernment is not to be blamed!

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 02:50 PM

thanks folk to put sri lanka in no 1 position in shoplifting

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:30 PM

I entertained some ruggerites in hongkong recently and know their real plight. Some of them are sons of VVIP's and carry credit cards with unlimited credit. Others are poor guys in their late teens / early 20s, not blessed with too much intelligence and working for no more than 12K per month

These guys are given an allowance of Rs 2500 per day and when overseas, once it is converted to USD etc it barely meets expenses for food so cant blame the poor bloke entirely.

Our archaic exchange control system etc and sports ministry are also to blame to some extent.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:38 PM

May be he is relative of Rohitha Bogalagama?

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:44 PM

all the crooks are in the highest office what nonsense are you on about mr. ananda

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:45 PM

takes a crook to run a crooked sports body

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:47 PM

Some time back a Sri Lankan Army Officer got caught for shoplifting in USA while he was on a traiing course.. CCTV pictures where published on sundat times too...

Well poor chap... I mean the ruggerite. when the Politicos rob the country in broad day light poor chap wanted to make a living by stealing.. i think we have send the same filthy politicos to parliment this time though they robbed the country durng the last few years.. so Y punish this chap.. ?

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 08:39 PM

A Srilankan shop lifts - comments from some idiotic imbeciles include insults to Sri Lanka - Buddhism - Politicans - ie nothing relavant to the incident. ----only this young man is responsible , dont blame his Parents or President.......
SRI LANKA - LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT !!!.
to those who hate GOSL - MR....here is your opportunity...
go as a refugee to Canada / Australia ....claim that you are a Sinhalese / Muslim who opposed GOSL-MR & supported UNP/ JVP.......just as Tamil Sri Lankans were accepted....demand refugee status in Canada / Australia as your Human Rights / Fundermental Rights.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 09:35 PM

he follow the foot step of our politicians. what a proud moment to our politicians!!!

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 10:10 PM

When I was on a SIA flight from Colombo to Singapore in 2008 there was a Army or Navy soccer team on the same flight. Some in the group continued to stand in aisles talking to their seated mates, obstructing the other passages and flight crew. The two Senior Officers accompanying them sat sipping drinks with total disregard to what was going on around them. What surprised me most was when one of the "show offs" in the group, stuffed an Air-Line blanket into his cabin bag, before arrival. If the Customs authourities
in Singapore checked his baggage this Sri Lanka soldier and supposedly sportsman would have been an embarasment and disgarce to Lanka and it armed forces.

    Tuesday, 13 April 2010 11:21 PM

he is navy player, sln forces has very good record stealing others

    Wednesday, 14 April 2010 12:28 AM

nobody condones such acts of hooliganism. But then again, what did the GOSL do to DIG Tyrell Gunatileke when he was caught shop lifting while still in service. Remember the nearest incident of our embassy man in Japan!! This incident does not require any publicity at all and should have been handled by the authorities responsible for this young mans behaviour.
Newspapers are scared to take on the real vagabonds of our country to task and go after the defenseless. Shame!!

    Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:44 AM

Quite right, Azfal. Our politicians are all third rate crooks. God help Sri Lanka.

    Wednesday, 14 April 2010 03:55 AM

sh sh sh its alright, high ranking steal in wholesome with a handshake and a smile including a VIP package, so whats wrong in smaller scale eh?

    Wednesday, 14 April 2010 04:52 AM

I think this fellow should be banned to represent Sri Lanka for ever.....

    Wednesday, 14 April 2010 05:02 AM

What is the connection you are making - if it is a foreigner it has no reference to us. Anyway no foreigner will lift anything from our shops - they have better fare.

    Wednesday, 14 April 2010 05:36 AM

Unless you send him to Parliament - they have all types of crooks but not shoplifters yet.

    Wednesday, 14 April 2010 05:38 AM

We will not run away but fight to the last against thuggery lawlessness abuse of power and daylight robbery in our beloved country.

    Wednesday, 14 April 2010 05:51 AM

Sorry mate - Tyrlel appealed against the original order and it was proved that the Jamaican Security guard introduced the merchandise into Tyrell's bag as per Security camera shot in the lift. In fact that Security Officer was sacked by the company.
So he was not a shoplifter but a good and decent police officer as against the hoodlums that lackey now in Police Service.

    Wednesday, 14 April 2010 07:07 AM

Well! the team officials have to be taken to task. The team should have been briefed and told of what the consequences will be in situations of this incident. The officials should have taken adequate precautions when sending out players of this nature who without any international experience are let loose and will result in this poor boy been penalised. This need not be an incident where he should be deported, come on !! many worst incidence have happened and this course of action is unacceptable. Have compassion and deal with the player after the team have returned to the country.Just run into his up brining perhaps he was tempted and that he acted in this manner. Over to you.

    Wednesday, 14 April 2010 07:42 AM

v know when you send the person to abroad....but its very usual to srilankan players...so go ahead..but Daily mirror stay with you....careful
