The External Affairs Ministry is making arrangements to import 12 Rolls- Royce cars and 100 BMW cars for the use of the heads of state who are scheduled to visit Sri Lanka to participate in the 23rd Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in November, sources said.

However it is not known whether these vehicles are to be re-exported after use.

No one knows who is importing these cars, although the External Affairs Ministry is involved in the matter.

The price of the Rolls- Royce Ghost car varies between US$ 246,500 and US$ 290,000. (Rs.31,500,000 and Rs. 37,000,000). A Rolls- Royce Phantom Car costs between US$ 399,000 and US$ 470,000.(Rs.51,000,000 and Rs. 60,000,000).

A BMW 5 Series  car costs between US$  58,000 and US$ 70,000.( Rs.7,500,000 and Rs.  9,000,000). A BMW 7 Series costs between US$ 73,000 and US$ 140,000 (Rs.9,000,000 and Rs. 18,000,000).

It is usual to import Rolls Royce and BMW cars for such events.

Yes we have to host. But in the way we can afford. If we get a visitor to our home, we will host them within our means. Are we going to host our visitors by depriving our children of their needs. We must know where we stand.

@ Dylan " we 'the people' are hosting it not just the government of Sri Lanka " a guy who posting via android phone will talk lot of economical point of view and future development. The pain of these kind a project bear by 80 % of lower middle class and poor people by Tex. That u never understand until u really experience it. Also dignity of a country is valued by people living status and hospitality. It does not rely on luxury cars. Effective management is fulfil the task with available resources. Wat we want is : Nice and patient ppl to say ayubowan, clean roads, standard car (wat v have enough), perfect peaceful hotel, amazing lankan food (if v satisfy wth thm wth food thats more enough) and proper coordination. Truth is every1 knws that these expenses are unwanted. But mom support her son though he is murder. sad that sme people have same mind for their supporting political party.

Even countries who can afford it do't go to such extremes to make an impression. This is pure unadulterated wastage and an extravagance we cannot afford.

    tincup1961 Thursday, 16 May 2013 08:06 AM

Some people need to wise up.
This is the best opportunity Sri Lanka will get for a long time to demonstrate what a wonderful country and tourist destination it is.
If all these heads of states visit and leave with a positive attitude towards the country, only good will flow in the future.
Tourism is sure to receive a significant boost if SL is seen as a safe, friendly, hospitable country to visit.
Every Sri Lankan should positively get behind this and make sure SL gets as much out of this important World stage event as possible.

This is what we say "munta hena gahanda oney"! All wasted to satisfy ones own self - to be the Chairman till the next session. These wont to be re-exported, these will automatically vanish into the private garages of the corrupt politicians, gamblers and drug dealers which the powers that be comprises!

    Prabath Thursday, 16 May 2013 07:56 AM

This a big event for Sri-Lanka.Therefore it is fair enough to spend money to bring down Cars. We have to import Limousine For Hon President, Her Excellency Mrs Rajapaksha, Hon. Pry minister and fpr Hon. Foreign Minister. We must show to the world that we are also able to do such events. I hope a Grand event in November. We can promote Sri-Lanka as a Tourist destination.

    zorro Thursday, 16 May 2013 07:17 AM

most of the state heads do travel with less prominent cars AUDI, PEUGEOT... or BMW then why do we need to entertain them with RRs. Out of that the economic status of SL is well known to other country leaders, why are we trying to make a show? are they going to belive like most of our country men that SL is the best, rich and most literate country in the world! This show is just to grab the cars after the CHOGM. The best way may be to lease or hire some Limousines from Singapore or Malaysia! A huge cut in the cost but the commissions lost for the profiteer.

There for it is reasonable to import luxury cars.By doing so we must prove that Sri-Lanka is a country with Human rights.

Most of the leaders with a conscience and a backbone will anyhow not come. Only second and third grade. The politicians from Aus, GB, Canada are not used to ride too luxurios. Only the leaders of Pariah states like Sri Lanka think the best is not good enough for them.
It is only prestige, if the President says " Sorry, but we are a 3rd world country and before all my people don't have food, I will not buy RR or BMW's" everyone will applaud.
